I've been trying to figure out why SH4 keeps crashing and at wits end at this point as to the cause. The system is a Q6600, 4Gig RAM, Radeon 2900XT 1Gig on Asus P5K Deluxe - latest drivers for everything, running under XP. The game will run for a bit and then freeze with repeating sound and/or garbage on screen. This is totally random, sometimes happening soon after starting a mission, sometimes after an hour and sometimes never. I really have no idea at this point why it crashes, no other games I own seem to have this problem. I also run Vista 64-bit, does the game run under Vista? Perhaps I should try it under that OS. Thanks for any ideas....

overheating? power supply? have you checked these? is it just the game that crashes or the whole pc?
oh btw welcome to subsim :)

The whole PC crashes (need to hard reset, with looping sound and/or garbage on screen). I do not think it is any of the PC components. The PC plays all my other games fine and I've ran Prime95 to check it for over 12 hours with no errors (I shut it down after that).
PS Thanks :)
Soundcard? (I think i recall threads where errors were often sound related)
Also, have you turned any settings off and tried, that might narrow the problem down.

If you have not yet, put the game directly on the C Drive and not in the Program files.
If you have Mods installed remove one at a time. Some mods don't play well. :damn:
There are very few sound drivers that work with Vista. Good place to look too!

Yup... The "looping sound" would lead me to look there first. It seems as though at least 95% of CTD complaints are from Vista users.
I dont care if your machine is brand spanking new out of the box and can play Halo 3 for hours on end... you still need to check for updated drivers for
*Video card
*Sound card
*OS updates
Also the comments regarding heat dissapation are relevant. I dont care if you ran Prime95 (whatever that is) for 48 hours it will not stress your system anywhere near as badly as SH4. Certain conditoins in SH4 can really work your system over.

Prime95 puts the computer under "CPU Load". SH4 adds the "GPU Load", which increases the power consumption and heats up other parts of the motherboard as well.

Face it folks, the most resource intensive programs aren't business applications, but computer games like SH4. When you play the game, you aren't just wasting time, you're helping advance the science of data processing and pressing technological capabilities to handle loads unimagined by "current" computer hardware. And you thought you were just playing a game...
It's called testing to destruction and paying for the priviledge. Intel, AMD, Asus, Nvidia, Microsoft and a host of other corporations all thank you very much.

Does your PC reboot or Bluescreen?
What does your event log say?
Have you tried SH4 without the PC cover?
Are your fans on the CPU or GPU in anyway filled with dust?
And forgive for asking, but is known to cause all kinds of problem:
Do you use a no-CD "patch" ?
Welcome to the forums!
official patch 1.3 IS a no-cd patch ;)

I am experiencing the same type of trouble. I have a high end system and have to turn everything down or off for the game to run.
CPU-E6800,VID CARD-X1950'S CROSSFIRED,MOBO-ASUS P5WDG2 WS PRO,RAM-OCZ PC8000 TI-ALPHA 2GB,STORAGE-WD 150 RAPTOR X,SOUND-X-FI ELITE PRO,OS-VISTA ULTIMATE 32BIT
anyone have any suggestion on what to tweak to get more out of the game????
Along time ago I had the same trouble but with Half-Life 2. My computer would run every program just fine except HL2. (Battlefield 2, F.E.A.R., Brothers in Arms, Company of Heroes...etc.) But for some reason HL2 would crash my machine after about an hour of play. Well, after further inspection, reading forums and testing I discovered my Video card was on the way out! Which really ticked me off because at the time it was only WEEKS old...I pulled it replaced it and WOOHOO! Problem solved. So, you might want to play around with it and also check your video card's manufacturer (website) check the FAQs' (as well as contacting Tech. support) and see if this is a noted problem for that card. Hope that helps and hope you get it figured out, EFFIN COMPUTERS!:hmm:
