I've been mulling over installing GWX for a while now but my sytem is just under the reccommended requirements for stock. I still get intermittant lock-ups and crashes.
Would GWX be too much for this poor old machine or will I need some upgrades first?
2 Ghz AMD Athalon
768 RAM
128 MB GC (Radeon 9500)
Opinion would be appreciated.

You will stuggle.;)
GWX 1.03 will run fine on the recommened specs.
You might be able to improve performance by using the optional 'Light Habour Traffic' mod that is included.
Don't worry, lockups etc are common in SH3/GWX especially when convoys/ships come into rendering range.
If you are going to upgrade, I suggest:
2GB Ram
X800 Pro ATI (best choice for the money & will allow full GFX)

Cheers Dalisa. That pretty much confirms what I thought. Looks like I'm just going to have to save some pennies and bear with stock a little longer.

Well, look at it this way.
If you download GWX now and it works well enough to be playable - BONUS!
If you download GWX now and it's not playable, you have the files for when you're ready. - BONUS!
If your system can play SH3 1.4b, it can play GWX 1.03. It was made that way. I only suggest you try the Light Harbour traffic.
GWX 1.04 (the latest update that being developed) WILL require SH3 Recommeded specs.;)

My specs are:
3.06 GHz Celron 345D
Nvidia GeForce FX 5500 with 256 DDR ram
and 512 MB
So I exceed the minimum specs, except that for me there is a bit of lag with the heavy harbor traffic and some times my time compresson lags quite a bit. Also, it can take up to a full 5 minutes for my saved games to load.
I was thinking it might be my video card as it's an old one (If I ever want to play the new Medal Of Honor that came out I'll HAVE to upgrade it as it won't run with mine), but actually it looks like it's my RAM instead. I've held out long enough and I'm finally going to upgrade to 1gb (I'd go 2gb, but my wife's computer needs an upgrade too!)

To both questions:
I've played GWX 1,03 on a 1,4 GHZ AMD, albeit with 1gb Ram and a far heavier GFX card, ati x850x pro
still, both of you should be able to play, and never used light harbor traffic, possibly add some memory though, and I suggest being careful with the museum, be sure to restart your game after visiting it's rather memory heavy I've found
now go forth and sink them! :arrgh!:

I've about the same specs
2.8 ghz
512 DDR ram
Geforce FX5700LE 256MB
the things that hold you back the most are the Video card & Memory
I think a upgrade to 1 gig or perhaps 2 Gb ram
your 5500 like my 5700 are outdated my friend
especially the 5500 as they are mainstream, nothing really fancy about it.
and a late Serie 6 or Serie 7 card could get ya forward very easy
and wont be a lot of cash to spend neither
make sure your Motherboard can support it

I have used GWX on a laptop (Pentium 3.3GHz, 512MB RAM, ATI 128MR Graphics Card) without serious problems. I was able to play without any problem and without lowering the graphical level of the game. The only area where I had issues was when loads of ships were in the vicinity and the game was a bit slow.
Now though with the new computer I bought I can load GWX in less than 20 seconds :yep: :smug:

So does my bank manager ;) :p :rotfl: :rotfl:
I have a 2.4G system with a 128 mg video and started with only 512 mg memory. Had some problems...though it would run. Once I bumped my memory up to 1 gig it ran faster. Then, when I bumped it up to a full 2 gig, I had no problems at all...except for the occassional stutter...

When you put it like that, it's got to be worth a try at least. Think I'll get downloading give it a bash.

Good man.
Be sure to pay the manual a visit while you're downloading. It's certainly worth it. I have NEVER seen a game manual that is that in-depth/accurate.:yep:
FYI, It contains important installation instructions.

You need to Download all the bin files, the GWX.exe and the GWX103.exe. You put them all in the same directory, run the GWX.exe and follow the instructions. After that you run the GWX103.exe to update it to v1.03. You can get them by clicking on the link under my signature. Your PC seems OK. If you can run SH3 without problems you will be OK with GWX.
Here are the detailed instructions concerning installations
Basic Install of GWX
1) Uninstall SH3 via Windows' "Add/Remove programs"
2) Open Windows Explorer and:
- *delete* the folder where you had installed SH3
- *delete* the \My Documents\SH3 folder
3) Reinstall SH3
4) If your SH3 did not come with patch v1.4b already included, install patch v1.4b. Ensure you install the patch that corresponds to your copy of SH3 (Download/DVD/EMEA/US)
5) OPTIONAL: Copy and paste this "clean" install as a backup to avoid the need to follow steps 1-3 if your game becomes corrupt in future
6) Visit the GWX Sticky (available by clicking on our sigs) and download into the SAME folder GWX.exe and the five .bin files. While there grab the v1.03 patch
7) Run GWX.exe and follow the installation prompts
8. Run GWX103.exe and follow the installation prompts
9) SH3 COMMANDER USERS: Visit the GWX Sticky and download the GWX 1.02+ Cfg files for SH3 Commander and unzip the contents DIRECTLY into your SH3 Commander\Cfg folder.
Install of Multiple Versions
1) Complete a fresh install of SH3 + 1.4b as normal.
2) Create a copy of the program folder & rename as required.
3) Install your mod of choice to the renamed version.
4) Create and rename shortcuts as required.
5) Use MultiSH3 to create separate save locations for each install.
SH3 Commander & Multiple Installs
It is recommended to have a separate install of Commander for each different install of SH3.
1) Install SH3Commander and rename the program folder to suit.
2) Rename each SH3Cmdr shortcut as required.
3) You will need to use the l: switch to point SH3Cmdr to the right installation.
Here's an example of the l: switch for dual installs, just tailor it to fit.....
Right click on the SH3Cmdr shortcut & choose properties.
Target
"C:\Program Files\SH3 Commander-GWX\SH3Cmdr.exe" /l:"C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Silent HunterIII-GWX"
Start in
"C:\Program Files\SH3 Commander-GWX"
