Just started a new career in nov '42 based in Bergen, as I was getting a bit bored been based in the Bay of Biscay region. I was wondering what are the best patrol grids for my type VII/C?
Also as 1943 is approacing fast, is it advisable to have my flak guns manned at all times, and should I stay surfaced during the day, and submerge at night due to imroved radar on aillied aircraft?

I did several patrols out of Bergen in early 1943 until I was sunk by aircraft north of Iceland.
If you have metox, quickly estimate a bearing and course of the aircraft, then dive before they pick you up on their radar. Stay down for an hour or two, surface and repeat. The important thing is to recharge batteries and air before the next crash dive. Does not matter if you are surfaced day or night since they have radar, and they do fly at night. Pray for extremely bad weather.
Does not make sense to fight it out with aircraft, eventually they're going to win. You may shoot down quite a few as I did but your hull begins to take minor damage as they begin to score some near misses. Then one aricraft you can't shoot down makes a perfect attack run straddling you with 4 bombs and it's all over.

A basic rule of thumb when encountering aircraft should be:
AALLLLLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRMMM!!!! and hit the 'C' key ;)

I have been doing on my way past Iceland - I encountered 5 Sunderlands so far, all at night. And as I have no radar or metox, I only get about a 3 second warning before crash diving:damn: . So far I've lucky and not been sunk..... Hope I make it past 1943..............

Bored, when I am playing, the Bay is where I want to be, at least for direct access to the Atlantic :yep: To each his own though, and variety is a good thing :D

Good luck with your career! :D

Welcome to Norway. In my case yesterday Iīve started from Trondheim at August 11th, 1941. Still no excessive fear from allied aircraft; rather from escorts of the northern convoys, my patrol zone.
In any case, always the same, as al real Kaleun: donīt matter which aircraft is:
Flugzeug gesichtet!= ALAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRMMMMM!!!!!!:yep:

Just thought I'd try a different base/location, as all my careers till now have been based in the Bay of Biscay.

In RL the Russian Convoy routes were possibly the least busy (traffic wise) during the war :hmm:

Not only IRL but in-game the Russian convoy routes are pretty busy, especially when the war heats up from '43 on. Lots of good targets up there. :up:
The chart cheats you on a patrol grid that far north, but you can still use the marked Soviet convoy routes to find juicy targets. And, yes, you will more often find Soviet convoys farther north in the summer and farther south in the winter -- which is why you have two separate tracks marked on your chart. Happy hunting! :D
