Was just wondering if there is sub to sub warfare in SH3?
Thanks.

You read my mind! I've been meaning to ask this very same question, just havn't got around to it with all the other ones.. ;)
I know there is that sub pen up above Scalpa Flow.. (my last patrol was around there), but didn't see any action.

In the the stock standard version of the game, the answer is no, but for GWX the answer is yes.
With the GWX subs they are either submerged, or on the surface, they can't go from surface to submerged due to coding limits (there has been a break through of sorts just recently, look in the SH3 mods thread)
This is a commanly asked question. Many have wished for it from day one (myself included). If the AI sub that can dive does get released and works, there will be cheering for all sides of the forum!

"With the GWX subs they are either submerged, or on the surface, they can't go from surface to submerged due to coding limits" Guess that's why they never seem to sink when I destroy them. Sat and watched one for over a day after I got the "She's going down" message. Just bobbed around like a cork. I wanted to tow it into port and maybe claim salvage on it :rotfl:

I have spotted and destroyed several S class subs in War Ace.
The coding thing mentioned explains the odd behavior noticed. They didn't sink but eventually would fade away like a ghost sub. They are cool to see for imersion but I think they are almost not worth taking out. Look at it like an armed trawler, deck gun and machine gun can do some damage to you and the tonnage reward is limited.

Iv'e sunk a S-class brit sub. Tried to sink it with a couple of torps which missed, so I sufaced and we had a bit of a deck gun exchange -I won, and sunk him. This happened about 200km NE of Brest.

So, what would change if I were to install GWX, does it make the game more difficult or no change? Are there pros and cons?

The world will never be the same.

I just wish I had known about how the Sh3 Engine applies smoothing groups to 3d objects when I modelled those subs for GWX, could have got some better results  (hard edges where needed)
Meh.. whats done is done.

You done a bloody great job :yep:

Pros and Cons of GWX, hmmmm....
Lotsa pros, very few cons from my point of view.
The water is maybe a little too murky for 3D cam gaming fun. If you're into realism you'll see that as a pro.
I'm not a fan of a couple of the mods, but the solution for that is easy enough. And the things I don't like, you might like...
The only reason I could give you for NOT installing GWX immediately would be to play the standard patched game for like 2 or 3 careers just so you'll be able to appreciate how much GWX adds to the game.
Other than that it's a no-brainer...

If you play the mod with SH3 Commander set the water clarity in the SH3 Options tab to 20 (18 is stock value)

Can SubCommander and GWX be installed at the same time without any issues?

Yes but you need to download and install the SH3 commander- GWX files which you can get from either the GWX site or the Jonesoft site.
There are only two cons to GWX.
The first is that the present version (1.03) pretty much quadruples the load time. I understand that the soon to be released 1.04 will reduce it somewhat.
The second is that if your PC isn't that new, it will put a lot more strain on it.
Even for newish PC's like mine, if you find yourself in the middle of some of the bigger new campaign features, such as Operation Dynamo, things may slow down so much that you have to spend hours at 1x time compression.
But that sort of event is rare, and you can always avoid them if you don't fancy trying to intercept the hundreds of vessels zipping across der Kanal. But that's too much for me to resist :arrgh!:

Is installing SH3 Commander with GWX considered a good idea, do most of you do this or is it unecessary?
