Attention.. Private on Deck! :p
Firstly, just wanted to say hello and thank you for all the helpful information I've gathered from this site. I've only been playing SSIII for 2 days now (old timer SS The First player from way back), and the fact I play on 100% realism has provided me a few hurdles, which all get covered by reading in these forums.
A couple of interesting things have already happened in my short lived U-Boat career. Started in the 1st Floatilla (firstly with the stock SSIII, and again now with GW mod). 3 patrols in the first attempt gave me 1 sunken small freighter which turned out to be from a neutral country at the time (no idea which one.. opps!) and currently my only fully sunk-by-torp kill, and 1 half sunk Tramp Steamer which took a torp shot but kept on steaming.. I then missed it with every other torp I had (:damn:), took out my frustration on it with my AA gun, blasting away every crate on it's deck and all the air funnels, then tried to ram it. Nothing worked (I couldn't even damage my own sub with side on rams) so I decided to play chicken. Burst some seams (my own sub, of course), while the pesky steamer just continued on it's way, while I scuttled ship.
Downloaded the GW supermod now and started again. First patrol, avoided contact of a few armed naval vessels (gave them a wide berth, plus confused with the welter of messages from command as to who we're at war with at the moment), found a small merchant, fired and missed with my torps once again (there's a reason for this which I've since discovered a work around!), frustration kicked in when the pesky critter turned it's flood lights onto me and I went at it with my AA guns. Took out everything that could be taken out, started moving around for another (probably failed) torpedo attack when I hear cheering coming from my crew. Slowly she starts to struggle over the 2 meter swells, the bow of the ship getting lower and lower and eventually she goes under. Not exactly how they teach you to do it, but tonnage is tonnage!
Anyway, I just discovered (by accident) the answer to a question I was going to ask, being how do you manually take control of the solutions computer.. now I should be a little more accurate with my torp attacks! (praying and knocking on wood).

Welcome to subsim Herr Kealuen! :arrgh!:
To take over the TDC computer, click the little switch that looks like it has an I and an O on it near all the guages, when you click on it all the controls light up so its hard to miss

Packerton, thanks for the warm welcome! Yeah, I found that out just before reading through a post somewhere.. ;)
Welcome!
Private on deck? Are you a marine?
Haha, no.. but that might explain Bernard.. (I've been having a jolly good laugh at the humorous SHIII picture thread).
I do have a quick question. How accurate is the watch officer at judging distances to targets? I like to use him as a back up to my distance calculations for computing torpedo solutions, but not sure how reliable he is.

Also I had a blonde moment, I should have said 'Seaman' not 'Private'.. maybe it's a good thing I didn't get accepted into the Royal Australian Navy.. :P

There is no such thing as a dumb question, so ask away ( just look at the FAQ sticky before you do, most answers are there)
Your brave to start at 100% realism on the first time out. With your torp problems, try the training missions before hand to get a better feel of the manual system.
Good luck and good hunting:arrgh!:
BTW Welcome aboard:D

Brave.. or stupid.. I still havn't worked that one out.. I'll let my results over the next few days answer this one.. :rotfl:
Thanks for the warm welcome peeps!
I did ask this question, but it got submerged under all the posts..

Oh, I've got another question! I found a discussion on it somewhere.. but I can't remember where it was, and now that I've installed GWX, I need to find the answer again.
In the stock version, whenever you had a contact appear on your nav map (one that was picked up either by the Luftwaffe or another German vessel or maybe a decoded Allied message, etc, etc) it showed what 'side' the contact belongs to. GWX has changed this to all showing up as unknowns. Is there any way to change this back again? The argument was (wherever I saw the discussion) that in whatever way the information was gathered about the particular vessel in the water, that they would also know which country or side it is on.

Welcome to subsim, Herr Kaleun.
If you take several plots on the nav map using the WO you can make a pretty good attack on your target. Just remembet he can be 100m off :)

Haha.. pun intended, I assume? ;)
To explain my nickname, my real life nickname is Frosty (surname is Frost.. kinda obvious when you think about it.. and very unoriginal.. my sister and my dad all had the same nickname when they were younger! :P), and I am a vegeterian. I used to chat with the nick Vegi (because Frosty was already taken), and when I started playing BF2, I needed to make a new one because both Frosty and Vegi were already taken.. so I combined them.. and now it's following me everywhere I go..

I'm not sure if it would be easy to do, that's something the GWX Dev team would have to answer for you.
However, I can tell you this:
If the ships are lit up with their running lights, and the merchants have spot lights on their flags, it's a good bet that they are either allies of us or neutral.
This is not always true in that your armed forces in the kriegsmarine will run dark.
Another way to tell if you have a valid target in your sites is to ask your WO to recommend a target once you have the ships in view. If he replies that he can not recommend a target, it's most likely because you're locked onto a neutral or ally of the kriegsmarine, so don't shoot!

Hi Frostyvegi, (I like your name too! )
To explain the reason for the grey contacts definitively: At the limits of lookout, or even first person perception, a ship on the horizon or the speck in the air that is a plane... are just that... unknown contacts or "bogeys." Grey contacts require you to identify them as friend or foe before engaging.
In low light conditions this is difficult to do, leaving you with dificult decisions. Engaging the wrong targets will cost you as it might in real life.
Regarding aircraft, if you take the time to identify it, it may be too late. Aircraft should be what scares you most. Your response to an aircraft should always be to crashdive.
GWX version 1.04 is in the developmental stage now. Here are some sneak peaks for you.

Its a good assumption though that if the ship has no lights on and its traveling towards Britian that its a Valid Target.
Neutrals usally have their lights on.
The hardest place to Identify ships is near Denmark but these are usally Neutrals or Allies so dont hunt their.

Another new guy here, a question on mods: i was looking at some screenshots (can't seem to find them again to refer to, as happens) and saw some awesome looking waves with a more crashing wave shape than the slightly dissapointing even lumps in stock SH3, i was wondering which mod this is from or if it is a tweak i can get without a mod, and if so which mods it might be included in/compatable with?
P.S. this is my first post. Hello everyone out there!

There's a good chance it's the GWX 1.03 supermod as most people here use it.

Guys, I don't intend to hijack this thread or go way offtopic, but I wanted to share my feelings towards this forum with you.
I've been hanging around many forums for a long time (been also watching this forum quite a while before joining) but I have never encountered such a friendly and helpful bunch like here.
Every newcomer is treated well, there are no flamewars and the veteran users are not ignorant twonks, bashing everyone around.
I honestly think that this forum is a shining example of how things should work.
Keep it up, guys!

Ach.. mass-quote time!!
Thanks for more of the warm welcomes and help guys. My only concern about the 'unconfirmed' targets is that I'm using the silly type II boat.. fuel capacity is an issue, particulary when your patrol is way up in AF territory. Most of my fuel is used in getting to and from my patrol area, even going at 1/3'rd speed. If I get a target near by, spend a few hours catching and tracking them to see if they are friendly or not, it burns alot of gas. I guess I just need to hope my next few patrols are closer until I can upgrade!
On that point, I restarted my career again (don't ask). Like I said, patrol was up at AF, practiced manual plotting of targets and got it down to an art form. Completed the patrol (at slow speed to conserve fuel!), headed as close to that big Island off the coast as I could before I was running on fumes and headed back after not even a whisker of a contact. On the Mainland side of halfway between England and the Kiel Cannal and the watch reports a target. Vector an angle, see it's a Passenger/Cargo, no flag lights in the early morning darkness, heart rate quickens. Start manual tracking, burning some precious fuels to gain some yardage and move into where I think is a good position and dive to periscope depth. Have a peek at him and he's zigzagging all over the place.. drats, he must have spotted me when I turned to a perpendicular angle to his course! :damn: (however, this confirmed that he's 'unfriendly'!!) The game was up, so I sufaced to ensure my WO could get the distances perfect for me, he's still zagging and a zigging, but I just sit there, 600 meters off his projected course. Manually enter his speed and estimated distance for a perfect 000 degree gyro angle.. waiting.. waiting.. tube open (good boy!), fire!
...
...
...
WOOT! Direct hit, smack bang under the engine room. Start dancing for glee and looking for the bottle of bubbly.. but the bugga is still chugging along??? :dead:
Grumble grumble.. take off and set myself up again 1km down range. It looks like he's slowed a little, but he's definately still moving. Once again, 600m off the projected path.. stationary.. waiting.. waiting.. tube open (phew).. manually adjusted the speed a little slower.. waiting.. FIRE! Another direct hit.. same place.. no fires though.. no breaking up and going down.. just slowly drifts to a halt. I've got Fraps running for my celebrations to be caught.. but to no avail. 40 minutes of waiting and seeing the water lapping at the sides.. shake my head in frustration and open the third torp tube and press fire in sheer disgust.. another perfect shot (he's not moving, so not even I could miss.. Bernard on the other hand..... :88)).. waiting.. waiting.. waiting.. finally!
So yeah.. I'm pretty happy, even though it's only a few k's of tonnage, I sat down and took control of the targeting and it worked like a charm. Now I just gotta practice with getting the ranges myself.. :shifty:

Haha.. ouch.. I don't know if I should be offended by that.. :x nah.. I'm not. ;) The reason I didn't get in was medical based. I didn't know it at the time, but I have an hyperactive thyroid.. which actually explains a heck of a lot of things that I just put down to be unfit but with a very high metabolism (high heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature but couldn't get my weight above 60kgs!!). All the other sections of the testing though I passed with flying colours. Such a shame too.

I wouldn't bother with passenger/cargo's Mr frostyveg, they are the work of the devil himself and renowned for being absolute pigs to sink:nope: If the titanic had been built by the same shipyard it would have breezed its maiden voyage with a short stop to pickup some ice for the champagne along the way;) save your torps for something more worthy:up:

Haha..
I would have.. I even fretted about using the third one to hurry things up (it was almost midnight and I had to get to bed cos I had 5 hours before I had to wake up.. ugh to working on a saturday!), but then I realised I was seriously running on fumes. I think I have about 200kms free of fuel left to get back to base! Even if I had a nice juicy target pop up infront of me I wouldn't be able to push my desiel reserves far enough for a track and take down..
Oh.. that's one thing I've been meaning to find out.. can you refuel up at other bases and not finish your patrol? I think that's something you could do in SH1 (my memory isn't that great).. and I havn't even tried exiting close to another friendly port... hmmmm...

Opps..
A correction, nothing major, I might add, but all this time I thought that the game I used to play was Silent Hunter (the first).. HOWEVER, I have just realised it was Silent Service II.. :damn:
Oh well.. I'm over it.
I was just reading the review for Silent Hunter IV.. and am considering in buying a copy. I've heard bad things about it.. the review spoke 'evenly' in regards to it's pros and cons. I watched a naval battle video yesterday that looked spectacular. I think I will get it, eventually.. but at the moment SHIII is taking up so much of my time.. (plus I am enjoying playing as a non-allied for once in a sub game!).
Anyway, that is all. :arrgh!:
