View Full Version : CTD when going to the bridge.

I have seen posts about this particular bug, the one where one goes from the map, or the interior of the boat, to the bridge, which is followed by the screen freezing, much accessing of the hard drive, further followed by a black screen, which culminates in the microsoft message "this program has encountered an error and must be shut down, a report of the error has been made"

Now, the meat of my post.

Has anyone sent in the error report?

The reason I ask is the fact this little window pops up shows it to be a conflict between windows and a file in SH4, perhaps Micro Soft themselves could solve this very anoying problem. Perhaps every time we get this message we should go ahead and send the report. I have not done so myself, but this problem is nigh on unacceptable, and should have been done away with in the last patch and am very tempted to get MS in on it. But something tells me one or two reports will not promt action, but I am sure a barage of reports may get some action.

What do you all say.

Actually, that problem could be campaign related.

Are you running stock, or a mod?

I used to see that quite a bit, actually, not in ages now have I seen it. More on my old machine, so it also might be hardware---though my old machien was running winXP Pro sp1, and my new machien runs sp2, that might matter).

If there is traffic that is broken within 20nm, when you pop out of map view (which abstracts movement of shipping), to 3d rendering mode externally (where everythign within 20nm becomes "real"), it can crash. Broken traffic includes stuff set to 2 columns, but there is only 1 ship. In 3d the game tries to make 2 columns with 1 ship, crash (sometimes I got BSODs, too).

I am running 1.3 with TM 6.0. But have had this problem with 1.2 and 1.3.

I try to make it a practice to save before going top side, but I really should not have to do that. But as we know, excutives know better than the dev team, so the game gets ramrodded through.

What upsets me is there are games like World of War craft, City of heroes, and so on that are increadibly graphics intensive, and yet my friends play for hours on end and NEVER have a CTD. The problems are with crappy programming on the part of sh4s development team brought on by some suit telling them how to do their job.:nope:

Sorry, venting. I love this game, but man is it irritating to have to re-boot my machine to be sure the cache is clear before reloading the game, something unecessary with other games.

Any particular place/date this happens, or just randomly?

Usually when a ship has been sighted and I go from the map to the bridge. It also happens when in harbor.

It has the hallmarks of a problem with a specific group in the campaign, but if that were true I think I'd be seeing many such reports. Odd.

much accessing of the hard drive,

How much RAM do you have? Perhaps your file swapping with the hard drive is the issue. I had one gig of RAM and my hard drive was swapping like mad until I added another gig. Perhaps you need to increase your virtual memory for the hard drive.

That could be the problem, I'll give it wirl.

After months of rock steady behavior, SH4 began crashing, usually when I was at high TC. I was never sure that was a trigger, or if my propensity to spend much of my time in that condition just increased the probability of the crash happening at that time. At first I thought it was the save game. I reloaded the last autosave on leaving port. CRASH. I loaded my game, then saved it without the replay. CRASH.

That was it. I uninstalled all mods, moved the mod folder to the desktop, uninstalled SH4, reinstalled, reinstalled JGSME, moved the MODS folder back in, reinstalled mods and in five minutes I was back to rock steady gameplay.

I don't remember doing anything flaky with my mods but you never know. All it can take is to uninstall mods but not in perfect reverse order. Could be cosmic rays. Who cares? It works, just like rebooting your computer when IT starts acting flaky. Give it a try and report back.

If might help to find the cause if you send me the save that causes the CTD when loaded and going to bridge (but is very unlikely to have such a save).

Also, it has to be from an unmoded game because

there aren't 2 people that use the same mods
mods are not guaranteed to be safe and correctly implemented.

I've had this from time to time ever since the day I got my copy of SH4. Doesn't really seem to matter are you using any mods or not

And seems to be completely random. Sometimes I get this many times per day, sometimes not even a single time

It may be related to some type of ship that makes the game crash when rendered. This explains why it crashes only at times: when that ship is in sight.

Also, the CTD's in port: is more likely to find that ship in port than in open sea.

But the funny thing in some of these CTD's I'm having is that you can actually go into the bridge without any problems sometimes by clicking throught the conning tower and then to the bridge and everything is ok. No CTD's of any kind but if you do the same by clicking the bridge tab, you'll get a CTD

#1 mods are not guaranteed to be safe and correctly implemented.
You got that right.

We have had the same CTD,as Misfit138 describes relating to route to bridge, map versus interior.seems double clicking bridge tab, will crash more often. I was thinking heat related, but we wish it could be looked at if patch 1.4 is comming any time soon. Happens after hrs.of play for us.

Perhaps you need to increase your virtual memory for the hard drive.
Please to give quick lesson, running 2 gigs. Hell it might be rendering. :hmm: We weren't watching FPS at the time of crash.:damn:
