Just re-did a fresh install of SH3, 1.4b & GWX mod and the hydrophone sounds are below useful to me.
I have a big hearing loss and with the original SH3 install instead of hearing at 34 km I would hear around 22-26km.
Now I can't hear until he is between 5000-5500m which gives me no wiggle room.
My S.O. maximum distance is around 14km, but usually only 10km to 8km or so befor he hears.

Yes!...I have used various depths & the seas are calm...

I really need to get some more hearing out of the hydrophones. is there a file or files that I can change to give me more distance for a contact?

specifically where & how please..

Thanks

did you try the ambient volume button on the bottom left of the hydrophone station?

Have a nice day :)

I'm all over the ambient volume knob on the lower right side of lthe hydrophone dial. If there is another one, then I can't find it.

I just did a single with the "happy times"...
My sonar man didn't give the first report until the whole convoy was 4.5km from the boat. I was pointing north which is perpendicular to their course.

If there isn't a file to tweek then I have no choice but to uninstall & just go with the standard, no mods version...

In the happy times mission the convoy is moving very slowly, and therefore makes less noise. There are also no warships running noisy search patterns at medium speed.

In short, this may not be the best mission to get an accurate assessment of typical hydrophone performance.

Why not test it again with some other situations to see if performance remains below what you expect.

Its not clear from your description whether the problem is that your SO is not reporting them early enough for you or that you can't hear them when listening yourself. These are two separate issues and the SO not reporting cannot be fixed by turning up the ambient volume.

Is this a descriptionof your problem? http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=114763&highlight=sonar

Are you hearing other sounds in game OK? If not then it may be that you have the sound effects set at too low a setting. For max volume they should be set on 0db.

Check the sound settings for your PC. Make sure that your Wave and Master volume sliders are turned up.

This may help also: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=102400&highlight=sound

If it's not a sound issue as such, but you want better hydrophone performance, try Rubini's 16k mod ... http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=112712&highlight=rubini ... and the 8k mod ... http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=107989&highlight=rubini

Mind you, IIRC these extend the hydrophone operator's effectiveness and not your own listening.

I had the exact same situation with GWX. I am typically a little hard of hearing in real life so I increased all the various prop sounds with the sound recorder. After a bit of trial and error I was able to hear ships at a respectable distance, somewhere between 18 and 28km distance depending on ship and weather.

I lave tested In career mode.........In various single modes.
for instance, in career mode:
a single large noisy cargo ship.
calm water.
I can not hear until he is at 5500M...at the earliest...
My S.O. doesn't pick up until very close either...

There must be a setting in the cft files somewhere that can be set to pick up sooner.
all of the various computer volumn controls are up fine...

It is just the hydrophone, and only the hydrophone, that the sound is to low for my hearing and also the setting for the S.O. detection must also be set to low.

Hemisent....
How did you go about increasing prop sounds with the recorder. That sounds like what I need to do here.
Is this recorder a folder somewhere? I couldn't locate it.

I am basically out of the game until I can get the sound for the hydrophone detection back to what it is in the standard SH3 level...

If you guys aren't having a problem then it must be something with my install because it was not a problem prior to GWX...

the ambient volume knob on the lower right side of the hydrophone dial ( which you found ) is kinda hard to adjust .....
.... thinking of a clock face ..... the highest setting on that knob would be about 2 O'clock ... the lowest setting is somewhere about 7 O'clock ....
leave port and go to periscope depth still in the harbor and man the sonar station ... point at something thats moving ( maybe the escort ) and then adjust to loudest ......

edit : I always seem to get better contact reports from a Petty Officer than a sailor also ... not sure why ... maybe sailors just don't care as much LOL ............

SH3 Sonar Room Sound Mod (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/../subsim_files/patches05/sonarmodv1.zip) (3.56 MB) by Clive Bradbury- This mod changes the ambient sound in the hydrophone station with more subtle background noise, which should make the tracking of contacts easier. It also includes a cargo ship sound file from a real vessel.

yep...I already did that. It is at its loudest.

Every volumn control on my computer ithat would have anything to do with hydrophone sound is at its loudest.
The background noise in the hydrophone is not the problem. it's not bad at all..normal I would say.

It is so faint at 5500m that it is bearly audible..like it would be at 30-34km in the original SH3. There are some files that need to be changed, but I don't know which ones or where they are. If I did I would change them for testing.
It's not my system it is the GWX mod.
Perhaps I have another bad install.

My Wolf howling at load up is not a clear contineous howl either. It has a break in it about mid way through the howl.

Using GWX I can hear all the way out to about 28km without any problem.

What are the weather conditions and what speed are the units you are listening to travelling at?

Low speed units in bad weather won't be able to be hard until you are quite close.

Say, first off, thanks for tipping me off to the existence of the ambient volume knob -- I never noticed it before! Now: How do I adjust it? I've tried left-clicking, double left-clicking, left-click-and-hold while I move the mouse around (like spinning the hydrophone), etc. Nothing seems to make that knob move. I'm beginning to think Bernard stuck his gum under the dial... :nope: What am I missing? Thanks!

I don't remember if the graphic moves but you should be able to hear the sound change up and down if you left click at around the 2 o clock position for max and the 7 o clock position for min volume.

I've said it all in my posts above.

You all can hear up to 28km just fine.

IN CLEAR, CALM, absolutely the ultimate of perfect listening conditions my sounds stop around 5-6km... I hear nothing beyond that!

I'm still hoping that someone who knows how to check the proper files that make the sound work to come along that can help me get this to work right. something in my setup is different then everyone elses.

Having a heck of a time to fix this problem aren't ya ? ... try this if you desire :

http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=5AA1AF9612CDF6EC

I had to zip the 2 files in order to upload at that site ... they include the STOCK SH3 with 1.4 patch sound files named Propeller_4_hyd.wav and Propeller_5_hyd.wav

Go to C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\Sound and back up the 2 files that are there first .. then copy and paste the ones I uploaded into that folder ...

The GWX files sound more realistic of course but if those are messed up then try these instead of deleting the whole GWX extension .... of course if this doesn't help any then just re-insert the 2 files you backed up into the sound folder again until someone else comes along with better help ......

Thank you slow n ez...I'll do it now & get back to you.
yes, things are not going as smoothly as I would like, but then if it did I wouldn't havbe anything to bit*h about...lol..
I really haven't had a chanch to check out the new sounds of GWX because of time limitations.
Now, to make matters worse, my wife is coming home tomorrow after a 6 week visit to her Texas home front. I have had unlimited (except for work) time to do what I like without background bitc*ing...
Thanks..

That did it slow...
It's back to where it was & I can hear fine from the depths, even in balmy weather.
Perhaps my GWX sound files were corrupted, I don't know & could care less at this point. I'll just keep it where it is...lol Thank you.

BTY, I haven't had time to try those graphs files you sent me because I'm in the middle of my first patrol again & I want to get through this so I don't have to go through all of those dang 1st patrol messages again.

I haven't found where I put those files yet. They are mods so I assume that have to finish this patrol & then put them somewhere in the commander files..
I don't know the exact procedure & time frame for installing mods & cammander. I don't want to loose the first patrol results & have to start all over again.

Great ! Glad it worked and now you can enjoy the game more ....... I don't remember sending you any graph ( mod ) files ..... but always install any mod after you at base at end of a patrol .. NOT in the middle of one ......

most mods are to be put into the MOD folder in C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\MODS and engerized with JSGME.exe ( which was installed with GWX in C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII )

this is not working either.
bummer..
when I put those sound files in it took out all of the voice commands such as:
"Plane spotted, Ship spotted" etc...all voice commands are now gone.
I don't kknow how they would interfere with those voice commands, but it did.
I wonder if it had anything to do with changing something in the middle of a patrol?
