Ahoy Shipmates! This is my first patrol on SH3, I have only had the gme for a couple of weeks but I have to say what a fantastic sim it is! I did have a few doubts about buying it[ My dad served on Hms Limbourne and HMS Liverpool during WW2. He was torpedoed twice and sunk once, so he will be turning in his grave}. I just wanted to canvas opinion about when to attack ships in harbour. I have just sneaked into Loch Ewe but the only reasonable target at anchor is Fiji Light cruiser. If I attack then I will unleash hell on my boat and crew{ there are 3 anti sub ships in the area and the water is very shallow}. Should I just sneak away and find a nice easy merchantman? Or will I get heaps of renown for carrying out a daring raid in the Royal Navys back yard. If I survive the onslaught that is!

Hi, I'd say attack. I've done it and got away undetected.

Don't do it. Better live on and attack easy targets that are more valuable to the Kriegsmarine.

I don't know about the realism level you play, but at higher levels, port raiding is very risky.

Well, your there yes?
A weapon unused, is a useless weapon. Even if in early war some of the torpedoes are turds. Try to get the best AOB you can, you may need to use impact pistols for midship impact as the shallows could prevent you from sending fish under her keel.

Welcome aboard btw.
You will most likely get a few standard responces about keeping out of shallow waters and harbours, or having to play the game a certain way etc. Try this; have some fun with the game and let yourself decide on what you want to do with it.

Save the game first, then attack. You can then go back to the saved game and replay.

Wivs,

It's probably no surprise that the community is split on the issue. The key question is if you want to play the more realistic "dead is dead", or want to play this as a game and try out different scenarios for fun.

For the former, make your attack decision based on if risking the lives of your crew are worth the target. A destroyer or cruiser isn't worth as much, but a battleship or carrier (or a tanker or liberty ship) might be. Do you have an clear exit lane from the harbor? How proficient are you at shallow operations? How close is the nearest deep water? Can you fire from a distance? Is there a period where the ASW assets are turned away from you? How about weather and visibility (it's easier to escape in dark, stormy seas)? Can you wait outside the harbor for traffic?

If the latter, then save a game, and give it a go. Hey, Prien did it. Worst thing that happens is you reload and try a different approach the next time.

As for me, I'm the "dead is dead" conservative type. I have let some juicy targets go when the odds were against me, but then again, my boat and I are still in the fight.

Welcome aboard!

I would try to slip out more quietly than I went in. It is a tempting tatget, but the lives of your crew and the boat are worth a lot more. Plenty of good targets in open water. And a much better chance of survival. I'm not saying to avoid risk altogether, just make sure you have plenty of water under your keel, and full batteries first. Then attack relentlessly with cunning and skill.

Good Hunting, and have fun.

Sink it. If she's stationary, you can pull back to 5000 yds or so and let fly. The extra distance will give you time to escape.

yes. let me do that stuff ;)
:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

now serious. on stock SH3 there is only 1 enterance and that is south from scapa (in GWX there are 3) so i would say. secure your escape route and blast the b-tard to walhalla :arrgh!:

in GWX: enter east or west, south has a subnet. kill everything on your way to the other side and exit there.

east side in, death and destruction, west side out.
usualy you wont get attacked. unless you mess it up ;)

Interesting intel you have on Naval Base at Scapa Flow,
Most probably of no help to Kaleun wivs at the moment,
Being as he is submerged in Loch Ewe.

now. Loch ewe :hmm:

stock eh.

if i remember correct there is a DD swarming at the enterance. kill it
watch out for the double subnet, mine's and the coastal arty
blast the DD's in port do hell and take out the Fiji.
if done correct there wont be a problem

note: i can be wrong though, this can be from WAC couse GWX has no subnets there. just mine's* but be carefull anyway

*you certainly cant see where i hit a mine

Granted... I couldn't use it til I modded the config file to allow 128 TC for land proximity.

To all you who replied, thanks. For info I pulled back to the entrance of Lock Ewe on the east side. Depth of water about 15m. I fire a salvo of 2 at the stationary Fiji. Distance about 9000m fish set to slow. Unfortunately the Fiji saw them and pulled up his anchor. Both fish slid just past the stern narrowly missing! I then spent a rather uncomfortable day try to save my life and my boat. Still on the positive side I learnt a lot about damage control! I:ll try an easier target today. Cheers Wivs.

Wivs, welcome aboard. I don't know if you know about this or not, but if you have stock SH 3 on you computer, you can upgrade the game and greatly improve your experience and enjoyment by installing GWX (Grey Wolves) Add-on. It make the game SO MUCH BETTER! Currently GWX is at version 1.03 and can be downloaded here for FREE:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=102096

It's self installing and includes a fantastic manual. And the GWX team is working 24/7 to bring us their final version 1.04 soon (watch the Silent Hunter 3 Workshop section carefully). Trust me, you want to get this thing installed over your stock SH 3!

Welcome aboard kaleun wivs.....get a feel for the game first then perhaps consider 'upping' the reality level bit by bit.
After you feel confident enough you might want to try a mod as a way of raising the realism of the gaming experience.
What is most important is that you make up your own mind :yep:
Ignore the luncheon meat

Good luck :arrgh!:

Just installed GwX , but on the start up screen an error occurred to SH3 and it had to close. Any ideas!
Just read the instructions! I think I need to install over a clean copy of sh3.

Just installed GwX , but on the start up screen an error occurred to SH3 and it had to close. Any ideas!
Just read the instructions! I think I need to install over a clean copy of sh3.

1.Uninstall SH3 via Windows' "Add/Remove programs"
2. Open Windows Explorer and:
- *delete* the folder where you had installed SH3
- *delete* the \My Documents\SH3 folder
3. Reinstall SH3
4. If your SH3 did not come with patch v1.4b already included, install patch v1.4b. Ensure you install the patch that corresponds to your copy of SH3 (Download/DVD/EMEA/US)
5. OPTIONAL: Copy and paste this "clean" install as a backup to avoid the need to follow steps 1-3 if your game becomes corrupt in future
6. Download theGWX.exe and the five .bin files. While there grab the v1.03 patch
7. Run GWX.exe and follow the installation prompts
8. Run GWX103.exe and follow the installation prompts
9. SH3 COMMANDER USERS: Download SH3Commander and download the GWX 1.02+ Cfg files for SH3 Commander and unzip the contents DIRECTLY into your SH3 Commander\Cfg folder.
