OK, they're native hunters, allowed a certain limit of whale kills, though limited to certain methods, which seem to exclude .50 caliber MGs and - I would guess - Shkval torpedoes, too.

But that's about it.

.50 caliber machine guns aren't that common among civilians. More likely it was shot with a bolt action .50 caliber.

This site and a few others say it was a high-powered Weatherby rifle. So it was probably a .460 Weatherby Magnum. A harpoon and 21 shots. Maybe they should have used a Shkval torpedo if they are that bad.
