1 SEP 42, departing La Spezia, Italy. 'Oh-Dark-Hundred'. I am following a ship out of the harbor, surfaced. On the Nav Chart I see several vessels around. When I left click on each, some of them have a 'dotted' [dashed?] circle around them, some distance out, except for a smaller pie shaped sector. That must mean something...
But what...please ? Their SONAR? I thought 'ASDIC' was a Brit invention... in those years.

As far as I know the dotted circle is their optimal sight range in fine weather. The pie shaped wedge is their listening range

Asdic was invented at the end of WW1
Most nations had some form of listening capabilities by WW2

'Likely arc of what a look-out could see'... seem right to me. After all it IS only a game, and modelling one lookout on the flag bridge [above the control bridge] would allow for the lack of search area dead aft... through the funnel(s), etc.
I'll settle for that. After all, why should a German Sub care about the searching area of a German war-ship...
Danke.........
