View Full Version : Some random questions -- pretty basic stuff
Most of my questions are very specific about enemy sonar. I've seen the very good sticky here on the sonar cone and other information, but I haven't seen these questions answered.
1) Am I safe from sonar/ASDIC (passive and listening) while on the surface? I assume that the surface wave action masks the sounds of my Type VIIB, but I got scared when executing a high speed end-around on an escorted convoy.
2) How do I know when the ASDIC pings have acquired me?
3) How accurate/useful is the sub-silhouette that shows my noise-level? I was running with silent running, 10 degrees right rudder, at 1 knot, and it turned brown on me. What was making noise?
4) Related question -- does using full rudder at all affect my acoustic signature? Or does it just slow me down when I'm trying to sneak away?
5) What's the purpose of renown? I know I can spend it for new crew and upgrades, but is there anything else it's used for? Is there any reason to "save" it or should I spend like a drunken sailor for any upgrades that help?

1) Sonar and ASDIC will not detect on the surface, so you should be safe from them. Visually, you might be detected. When radar comes along for the Allies, the surface is not safe.
2) You will hear the pings and you should also get a message "Sir, the enemy is pinging us."
3) The little sub that changes color is very accurate. Were you in Silent Running during the situation you described? Silent Running helps.
4) I've read that you should not go over 10-degrees rudder when you're trying to get away. Therefore, full rudder probably makes more noise.
5) Renown is neccessary for upgrades. Save it and spend it wisely. You'll earn Renown based on your patrols, I let it accumulate until new upgrades are available. Upgrades are important with the exclusion of Radar in my opinion. So far I've used FuMO-29 and FuMO-30 Radar and they're not worth a dime. Also, I never waste renown on crew; I always add the cheapest crew.
1) Yes, but you are then at risk from being visually spotted and from radar whilest surfaced! keep your distance while surfaced, at 6km you should be ok so long as they dont have radar.
2) pretty much as soon you hear them you are in trouble and the depth charges never lie! The Ai never make random pings like real Escorts did, In SH3 they only do it to pin-point you after they are already aware of your presents.
3) Fairly accuate! (but not 100%) it tells you how detectable you are and not weather you really have been detected.
You may have been at silent running @ 1 knot but at what depth? anything less than 150m and you can be discovered pretty easily.
4) From what I have heard no it does not effect it (i could be wrong here).
5) Other than what you mentioned it can be used to purchase a whole new Uboat type - thats all.

It slows you down considerably -- by a knot or more if you are running 2-3 knots. And that tempts you to rev it up a bit, which is when they find you (they go after RPMs, not speed).
10 degree rudder is the most I use unless I simply must present a better profile.
Full rudder doesn't affect your signature; that's all angle and depth.
