OK, two questions here. First of all, my status: playing 1.3 with the fixed Japanese radar patch installed (this is important). I'm completely new to this game, but have a bit of experience with subsims in the past, so I'm playing on middling-wuss mode (most of the realism turned on, save for fuel and manual targeting). So I'm doing alright. But now it's 1943, and I have SJ radar...and I'm presuming the Japanese boats do too.

So HOW do I get close enough to get a visual confirmation to report a convoy in? Previously I was able to (just) exploit my low-profile, but that doesn't work anymore presumably (it didn't last time, when they saw me before I 'saw' them). And it seems that you have to have the convoy in sight when you make the report; scoping them via periscope, running a short distance away, and trying to do the report that way didn't work. So, some help here?

Question 2: I'm on a 'patrol loop'. 5th time in a row being told to visit the Marshall Islands (started getting these in mid-42). I go, dutifully hang around watching seagulls for 48 hours, wait for the star to go grey and radio in, and follow all of my subsequent missions until I've got no shots left. Never RTB with an 'incomplete' on my record. But I keep getting sent back. Do I have to sink a ship in-radius during those 48 hours to break this cycle? Cause I've yet to SEE one.

And last thing, not a question but a comment on AI. Seems a bit...weak sometimes. Found what seemed to be a juicy target: Huge European Liner surrounded by Akazuki destroyers. Managed to knock off two of the 3 escorts, and damaged the third...and was able to trail the boat at 8 knots submerged. This is what I dind't understand. They _clearly_ knew I was there, both destroyer and liner were weaving around. But they never accelerated (I know those big liners usually cruise at 19), nor did the destroyer make any effort to engage me after I fell in right behind his charge. Even after I dropped my last 4 fish into the big boat and blew it up, the destroyer continued on his merry way, happily ignoring me. If only it were always that easy...

1. I have started to sprint ahead of the convoy and get in position to run an attack but be well outside of visual range. come to an all stop and submerge to about 30ft. This way your decks will be awash but not the conning tower. If possible make sure you are oriented along the convoys path so that you will now present a very small visual and radar profile to the enemy. BE PATIENT. Keep your targetting binoculars pointed in the direction that you expect the convoy to appear from. You should be able to get a visual on the three merchants needed to be able to send of the report before you are spotted. I find that it helps to watch the behavior of the escorts on your map or radar screen to tell whether they are just trolling along or actually running detection patterns.
2. did you stay within 50nm of the designated patrol point? (try drawing a circle around the star to ensure you stay within that perimeter.
Happy hunting:arrgh!:

Try TM 1.6, I think its incorporated in that Mod pack, if you want the stand alone fix go here and look for it:

As a last resort, I know it was an option mod in the TM 1.4 Mod pack (support folder)

I don't know if you send a report (not a contact report) when entering the designated aria but do so, normally you get a reply like "engage all enemy shipping in the aria". For some reason Sub Com wants to know exactly where you are in order for it to give you your subsequent mission. Also report your killings after it's safe to come up (sometimes it take a long time to get that new order and you're just going to have to wait until the icon turns Grey) I'm glad they don't have "be home at 22h00" curfews :)

I've had numerous careers and never had any repeated patrol missions yet.

Side note:
Read this thread for more info on the repeated patrol issue:

About your last entry.

Ducimus has changed the AI somewhat in his Trigger Maru Mod packs. You might want to try that one out and see if it's to your liking. If you want to see what he changed read the README.

Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks for the reply, but I think TriggerMaru might be a bit beyond my abilities, to be honest. Even with automatic targetting _on_ I'm not nearly at efficient at shooting as I ought to be.

Thanks for the suggestoin to radio in when I arrive, I'll try that. I'm also reading the thread you pointed me to.
