Because Im terrible. In career mode, I cant even come close to hitting the Hurricanes, they move too fast, you have to lead them forever. The aiming device is usless. And going after the Swordfish is risky. Even though they fly slow they are stiill hard to hit, and if you let them get too close they can end you career.
When my flak gunner Wolf Degen finally shot down a hurricane, I put The Rolling Stones "Gimme Shelter' over the gramaphone. Adolf Conrad came up to me and said
"Kaleun, where did you get this magnecifient music?"
to which I replied "Im from the future"

same here.....absolutely god-awful.......these days i tend to dive rather than take on any planes....
Have a nice day :)
The only aircraft I've ever shot at were the ones in the training mission. "Aircraft spotted" "ALAAAARM!!!!"

Depends what it is and what gun im on. Swordfish fall like leaves from a tree...but i run like a wuss when it comes to the bigger bombers later in the war.
They travel packs...like wild dogs.

Shot down a Wellington the other day,the AA crew have an annoying habit of targeting one plane even if there are two until one is destroyed, leaving one bandit to do you loads of damage, hence them flying in pairs:hmm:so I manned the other AA gun and give him what for:arrgh!:copied how far the other crew were shooting in front and.........result:up:one dead wellie;)at medium range as well:rock:wouldn't try it with a mozzie though:nope:

Lousy. And the Only thing it's ever used for is to hole the occasional schooner. I see aircraft, I run for 60m.

I use the flak guns for putting down merchants after running out of eels and deck gun ammo. If they are still and helpless, parking next to them and using the flak guns for a while, will wear them out. Some pesky ships that refuse to sink will go down this way.

I too am also a poor shot when it comes to the flak gun - anything that flies faster than a Waldo, I cannot shoot down:damn:
However im sure things will improve once I get a quad flak for my U-boat:arrgh!:

The Fatherland pays me for sinking ships, not for shooting down RAF machines. For me aircraft is sinonymous of crash dive. Never stop even to see which aircraft type.
I'm too busy diving to learn how good or bad my flack crew is. ;)

Me too, early in the war if it's one plane, I'll let my flak gunner try. But two or more planes, it's crash dive!!!!!!
I'm reading Michael Gannon's Operation Drumbeat (which I highly recommend, BTW). He quotes from an "admonition" message (no date given) from BdU concerning the appropriate response of a U-boat to a surprise attack by aircraft."For the boat to dive safely in an aircraft situation, the plane must be at least 8,000 meters distant. If in doubt remain surfaced. During a recent surprise attack on a group of three U-boats, one boat made the mistake of submerging, It was bombed while diving and lost. The surface defense of the others was successful. Moral: When surprised stay above and shoot. Diving is death."
....flak gunner Wolf Degen finally shot down a hurricane....
Good ol' Degen. Used that name during WaW I. ;)

Yeah some of the planes just seem to never go down.

If it's a bi-plane or maybe like a pby I let highly qualified flakgunner deal with it, because I suck at the flak gun. Better then 80% of the time it's a quick dive to 25m at flank. Any type of fighter plane - forget about it.

I tried to shoot a Wellington down all by myself. Result was a boat with 4 destroyed bow tubes, an angry crew and the laughter of the other kaleuns back in the nightclub in st. nazaire when U-45 came back after 3 days at sea.
3 years later i got my revenge. Did 2 patrols with an u-flak and took down 23 aircraft. :smug:

>> Me, I'm a U-Flak kaptain. Downing aircraft is my best role.. hell, i can down aircraft in a submarine better than i can sink a ship. Guess its because i'm a pilot in RL, and a flight sim pilot too. Oh well, just those dam DD's that manage to wreak my day.
GWX
And who else found SH4 so eazy that they came back to the good side. Sink them all!

Or maybe it's because the game makes it far easier than it was in real life. The real U-Flak boats were a dismal failure:

I only take aircraft on once I got twin AA guns and only if I must.
Since I installed GWX 1.03 1 week after release , I shot down (3!) planes in total. 2 Swordfish and 1 Anson if I remember it right.
Not necessary to say that I tried many more... but I learned the hard way the meaning of
DIVE!!!!!

IRL the odds were heavily stacked in favour of the aircraft.
Usually the best the Uboat could hope to achieve was to keep the aircraft at arms length until the sub got the chance to dive.
Often, the aircraft would call in assistance from surface or other airborne assets.
Remember, once the pressure hull was pierced, the sub was no longer capable of diving.
Over 250 Uboats were lost to aircraft during the war.

I have a near 100% success rate with the flak gun...........against small boats/ships that is!:p Only if I run out of ammo does the ship not sink. Aircraft I never bother with. Alarrrmmmm! Crash dive!
