View Full Version : I don't mind dud's but this is getting ridiculous..
On my second patrol first mission 5 of my torp's were premature.
I figured that could happen, went for a refit and on my second mission, out of my 12 bow torp's 8 were premature. :nope:
Took me 3 day's after the initial assault to relocate the taksforce just to find out the damn torpedoes were dud's again and another 2 day's after that to find out the same again. last 4 tub's arn't used cause now I lost the TF :damn:
Really starting to wonder if I have a saboteur aboard.

That's what Enright said! Then he resigned his command.

You are experiencing what US submariners (plus destroyermen) actually experienced in WW2- torpedo failures on a massive scale. You'll just have to grin and bear it, as they had to.
Those aren't duds. Either your crew isn't properly maintaining the fish or you're missing the target. The torpedos are perfect.

Yeah this, it's tough, imagine being there :o

Definitely not missing the targets as they do their thing, it's just that they do it at 400yrds to 600yrds. (Normally I sit at 1000yrds to 1200yrds for a kill)
As for the crew not polishing the torpedoes or waxing them enough.. well.. I doubt very much the Modding community has added that to their Mod..
If they did... chapeau!
Like I said, I don't mind the dud's.. otherwise I'd set the option "no dud's".
No less then 15 fish were premature, one after the other.. not a single 'good' torpedo between them, that is exaggerating it a bit.
I'm not the 1 torp 1 kill kind of player (hate that) although I always look for the sweet spot of a vessel in order to save as many fish as I can just in case I find the 'big' one.

1) Peto wasn't serious. In fact he's not actually Admiral Christie ghost. No joking. ;)
2) It happened. And worse than that. Take a look at USS Tinosa misfortune (a good old Silent Service II memory ;) ) the story of which was posted over this very board :)

FWIW, the RL failure rate was approaching 70%.
BTW, when CCIP started his "hardcore torpedo dud" mod (which makes them very much worse than stock, BTW ;) ), some people had a problem where if they got 1 failure (usually a gyro angle problem), EVERY fish they fired that patrol had the problem. It could be that every so often random stuff ends up not random for a whole patrol...
One thing is that premature rates are very sensitive to the sea state. Were you shooting in marginal weather?

On the first mission I had bad weather, very bad weather... lots of rain and winds up to 15kts and big waves, very big waves... even my crew got sick.
Lost the frist 5 on that assault.
The now being 12 premature explosions (all but the stern torpedoes which I'm taking back for some testing in port) where all fired in calm seas (winds up to 3kts and clear sky's)

This is the perfect set-up otherwise you will get a dud

It was two long years before the torpedo designers got their act together. The Skippers felt much the say way as you do. Frustration is about the only word that can describe the torpedo problems.

Some tips to keep the duds/prematures down.
1. Fire torpedos with at least 6 seconds between them. Not to sure why but i think it has something to do with the magnetic detonator.
2. Try not to hit the target with a torpedo at 90º. The impact trigger on the mk. 14's were made out of a softer metal so they tended to bend or break and not set off the torpex. Try to hit with a lesser angle like 70º or so. even that might be too much.
Hope it helps
thx m8,
Thing is they never gotten close to the vessel

Just out of curiosity what level of difficulty are you runnnig and are you using any additional mods that might effect torpedo dud rates? Reason I ask is that I'm at high difficulty and "duds" check to 'on' but in my current patrol I've had 5/5 hit, no duds and the date is 12/11/41. Had a hail Mary 7500 yd shot on a Kongo, thought for sure the torps had missed (was alinging for a stern shot), when all 4 slammed home and 2 hours later a Kongo was on the bottom of the ocean. That coupled with the small transport I sunk before running into the Task Force means I have a perfect record in this patrol. And in general in the game I've had precious few duds. Though I'm taking a page from SH1 and run the torps at their shallowest depth setting and switch the magnetic exploder to contact and always attempt to shoot at less than 90 degrees to the target. Not sure if any of that works from a game standpoint but I had that work-around instilled in me from SH1. And typically I shoot at less than 1200 yds (700-1000 optimal), the Kongo shot was the first I've ever tried longer than 2000 yds.
But I'm more interested in what your difficulty level is (if that has anything to do with dud rates or is it only the dud check box?) as I've had maybe 6 duds in a month of play. Even in SH1 with the above workaround the dud rate was somewhere approaching 50%.
Dud's are checked in realism
Mod's I used on that campaign are:
TM 1.6
TM 1.6 GFX
NSM 3.2
Capt.midnight.
I understand that Ducimus uses his torpedo files in the Mod pack, but as I felt that WernerSobers NSM 3.2 should be as he made it (no offense Ducimus) I overlapped Werners mod over TM 1.6. (also restarted the mission without the overlap and the dud's (premature explosions) remained)
Obviously I used JSGME to do so.
Now I'm back to TM 1.5 & GFX, NSM 3.0 which seems to have solved the problem for me.
I still get the dud's (about 3 to 8 on a mission) but not 17 premature explosions in a row :smug:.
