March 1941 and BdU has assigned me a patrol grid just south of Freetown. I set off in my trusty Type VII from St Nazaire expecting a long and fruitless voyage. For some reason Freetown never works for me, give me the North Atlantic anyday. I just never seem to find anything worthwhile
So when my lookouts shouted out a ship sighting on only our second day out I got a bit of a shock. Travelling at 8 knots to conserve fuel we had only sailed about 300 km from harbour. Since I rarely see German ships outside of ports my second thought was 'Hunter/Killer Group'. (My first being 'Bugger!)
Looking through the binoculars I could make out what looked like 3 ships in line abreast sweeping straight towards me. Fighting back the tears I went to the uzo to try and lock on to the middle one to determine the course. What I had thought was 3 ships approaching was actually the funnel and 2 masts of a ship travelling at 90 degrees to my course. A troop transport the uzo said :arrgh!:
After changing my pants I plotted the next course of action. I was guessing it wasn't one of ours and although in reality the British would never sail an unescorted troopship down the French coast :88) I was hoping the computer didn't know this. I decided to proceed as if it were an enemy and set up my attack submerging at my preferred ambush point. I was prepared for a British (shoot) german (dont shoot) or even Spanish (shoot cos I have never forgiven them for that penalty shootout in the 2002 World Cup)
What I wasn't prepared for was a Swedish troop transport cruising in the Bay of Biscay in the middle of a war. What were they upto? A surprise attack or just bringing the lads for a bit of a cruise?

And I should point out I didn't identify it as a troop transport it came up on the uzo automatically

yup a passenger liner. i've seen that same ship in the general area in 1944. they could have picked a little better route.
Have you run across one of the irish convoys yet??
Don't asl Fogh about Irish convoys :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Yeah there's a small 4 ship convoy that I've found in and around the BF grids. Couple of medium tankers and some small merchants IIRC. Pair of Argentinian merchants crossing my path lately as well. Large merchant and small passenger/cargo. Nearly sank them a few times as they insist on sailing at night without lights :nope:

Why aren't all the neutrals sailing alone lit up like christmas trees? This is why I hate the freetown run. Since my post yesterday I ran across 3 US medium tankers sailing without lights on 3 different occassions and it always seems to be at night :damn: It gets frustrating to set up those attacks and then see the Stars and Stripes.
I might declare war 9 months early :arrgh!:
WHAAAAA!? You spotted an SWEDISH ship and you DIDNT FIRE!? WHAT KIND OF KALEUN ARE YOU!!?? :damn:

I've got a swedish girlfriend and 2 swedish speaking children. Seeing as my girlfriend was standing behind me after I spotted it I thought it best not to send it the bottom.
I get enough grief

I'v never forgiven Ian Harte either..... :yep:
I agree with Dowly! You should have sunk it! If nothing else you should have saved the game and done something else untill you were alone and then you could have sunk it! :yep::up::arrgh!:

Speaking of which, I found a couple of Finnish merchants escorted by an Armed Tugboat some 100 miles west of Brest in summer 1940. Quite odd, isn't it?
Sorry, no screenshot -- but just believe me...
Of course I let them go. I was out of torps, anyway.
