Ok. so over the last few weeks I've had a bit more time to read the
forums and as I sit here this morning, something has occured to me.

I just posted on the Arrrgggggggghhhhh! thread my complete agreement
with Jimbuna that more aggressive action is your best defence against
aggressive escorts.

So here it is, it has been standard advice around here to go deep and
silent and minimize profile and move away Quietly........................

To Paraphrase Don Henly..............I will not go quietly

Its not that evasion is a bad choice its not, and reflects historical
doctrine.

but.................

I prefer to fight at peridepth, You can you know, even against
escorts with HH and even in a Standard none uberized Sub.
(IXB still my preferred ride)

So I know Im not the only one and I thought I would start a thread
to discuss the alternative methods other than standard evasion practice's

in my Case as often as not I still use all the standard practices of
a good approach, when I am doing a mass opening salvo using all
torps in the opener, I do evade.

Mass salvo isnt always what im in the mood for though so when I
am trickling out shots over time as the convoy approaches I use
a varied bag of tricks.

Normally I try to orient myself at about - 25 or 30 degrees to the
DD's axis of approach, when He closes to attack I wait until hes
close enough and angled enough that it will be too late. then
Flank ahead Hard right (or left) rudder and basically come down the
side of the DD at about the edge of where the throwers drop the
dc's. crazy maybe but theyve gotta get a hit and if after parralleling
I move outside again they do not often hit.

another favourite is when after the first torps hit if the DD's seem to
have me at the Datum point then I will hit all back slow an put on a
ten degree turn (port or starboard as is appropo to the situation)
what happens is the dd's track you in the outside turn and make
there intercept angle a little more accute, what happens here
is that after the zig zagging DD closes again to attack run on the
last zig they end up accutely on the inside turn trying to track on
your stern this is the moment where again flank ahead reverse your
turn full rudder and crank it. due to mutual closing speeds the destroyer
is unable to make the adjustment and you end up in his baffles in seconds
straighten up along the dds axis and then start a shallow turn one way or the other then the dd will respond by turning in the shallow turn direction
then increase speed cut hard in the opposite direction then drop
a CM.
After a few boatlengths of staying in his baffles while hes turning go silent.
then get ready to shoot as the DD will come around and line up on the
point where he lost you and found the CM when he turned. now of course
the DD will zig zag but the engagement range is very close in this circumstance. so he wont dodge when you aim at his flank from
300m if the DD does pick you up anyway dont panic. put up the
scope and give him something to home on then. lock the target
and open the tube and wait for the correct moment 400 m away
charging fast and zigzagging the idea being that as he zig zags
his bow will pass through the crosshairs as he does so microseconds
prior to that fire the torpedo. (or salvo two or three) with a little practice this is not impossible.
it also tends to get the hair on the back of your neck standing up,
and after all isnt that why we play.

any others besides Balz that would have a similar type tactical approach.

honestly I think I get sunk less often than with standard evasive practices.

theres more but that will do for now.

No worries Jimbuna (Unless I've offended thee) I have been wrong
once before when I once thought I was mistaken.:|\\

No offence at all matey....in actual fact I've read your post with the deepest of interest and may well try out the tactics you are describing (for evaluation purposes of course) ;)

I have been known to dual a frigate or two rather than dive

Moving along

I dont always dive deep when the dd is on attack run
Sometimes they find it harder to hit you at PD than deep

I often let them pass on the first run , using flank and rudder to escape any DC

Then go deep if I need to as I can hit flank while in his baffles then turn away as hit silent and drigt down

another serious advantage of the Peridepth battle is
that if you are reloading or out of Torps, the DD's
by your position set the DC's to shallow and will
often blow off there own Fantails.

A wise general uses the enemies supplies while in the field
Sun Tzu.

@ BBW Im not surprised at your occasional use of this approach
whats surprising is that youve found some time to play between
now and 2005

TBH was a test
Without going into details I ran a test mission against a convoy over a hundred and thirty times

As you can imagine was boring after the first few

So I spiced it up by taking on the escorts
I needed to survive to be able to check all units so usually only sunk the lead escort before diving
Occasionally took out one of the flank ones too
Only once did I manage to sink both fore flank escorts and the point one and survive long enough

Most of the time just dived and cycled through units on next view

Sounds like a vaguely familiar process somehow.
