View Full Version : Any idea how to get out of this one?

well, this is becoming more anoying then anything

Its 1940, I was running on the surface off the east coast of england. I ended up running into 2 armed trawlers and a V&W Destroyer about 85 Miles South East of Hull. I dove and hit the bottom which is about 20 meters deep. Now, I managed to fire from periscope depth and sink the V&W, however, i wasted all of my Torpedoes trying to hit the 2 trawlers, and now I am out.

So, Ive been trapped on the bottom for more then 14 hours now, and I seem to have no way out of it. The Trawlers keep pinging me, they seem to be out of depth charges, so they cant attack me unless i surface.

Now, Ive tried ever trick i could think of at the time. Playing dead, Surface and sink the destroyers, surface and run like a bat out of hell, surface, get shot and play dead....and so on.

So, aside from giving up on my very succesful mission, and loading from an earlier save, any one have a bright idea to get me out of this?

Im very temped to thow Das Boot (the Uncut Version mind you) in on my laptop which i was surfing the net with, and hope when the movie ends in 5 hours, they will be gone.

If they're out of depth charges, can't you just silent-run out of there at 19m depth?

point the boat toward the darkest (and therfore depest) spot on the map and make a b-line right for it.

only other suggestion i can make is let them make DC runs on you while your sitting shallow... with any luck they will graze the conning tower and sink themselves and you can run for your life... if you survive.

as long as they are in contact with you the chances of more enemy boats showing up increases.

good luck.

and for future reference. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER attack a single escort or a pack of them in shallow water (less than 150 meters). They just arent worth enough tonnage or renown to be worth it.

unless your in the suicide squad driving around an uber-fantasy-boat :rotfl:then i recommend high speed slashing attacks on even the largest task force regardless of water depth.

you wouldn't be referring to 'floating Tiger tanks' now would you? that line still kills me :rotfl:

always always check the depth below the keel before attacking - later in the war this would have proved your downfall.

If they are out of DC's they can't harm you if you stay submerged....so get your boat underway....

Maybe you could outrun them if you surfaced....iirc trawlers don't pack a big gun....or do they?

Move yourself as far as possible underwater until you get some water under your keel. Be careful about using high TC though as they may call a friend who can do some damage.

Either that or surface and duke it out withem or try to out run them at flank.:arrgh!:

Sillent running, 2 knots, rudder five degrees until you lose the buggers. Sitting doggo will not do any good. Aim for deep water.

Like mentioned above never attack escorts in shallow water. Better yet, stay out of shallow water.

Read the articles on my webbie, they'll save you a lot of grief.

I once had a similar experience with a DD in the Med, I had to retreat to Tunis, yes, that's right, Tunis.

Once I knew I'd make port we duked it out on the surface. The, now late, HMS Whirlwind, was also out of depth charges. Lost one officer and three crewmen.

In this case, go with the suggestion Brag gave. I do hope you have some batteries left.

heck.. if they out of Depth charges.... head south east and let them follow you .... at one point you need to surface and quickly send a contact report and then submerge again.. hopefully before too long you'll hear them getting taken out by the flyboys if they aren't too far away to help you ........

Reminds me of an end to one particular career.
A dozen patrols and I go cocky and chased down a tanker into the shallows. A traller and to D/E's wouldn't let me go. Tried everything, including playing possum right next to my sunk tanker, with it's nose still sticking out of the water. One would circle and the other would wait. The Luftwaffe? They showed up, and got shot down. Tried sneeking away while the D/E's were busy with them, didn't get far then my jazz got blasted.
Ehh, it's just a game so try not to blow a fuse.
Hey, some guys will give you good tips to try, but the truth is you might want to break out the chocolate cake and Beer because you've taken your crew into a no win situation and all will most likely perish.

You can outrun a trawler
But you will take time to get up to speed
Plus the 4inch bow chaser comes into the story then

As posted above head towards deep water
Silent as you can rudder a couple of degrees over one way then the other

The more time you spend in the shallows with those 2 in contact the higher the chance something else WILL show up
With DCs too

you know, back in WWII the germans came up with a "great" idea of how to get tanks across rivers without the use of bridges. The put a floating bouy on top of the tank, and fitted to this was a long airhose which would float above the water

the idea was, that the tank would be made 100% water proof, and it would drive underwater and across the river.

However, as amazing as it may sound, a 40 tons tank underwater still floats somewhat, so it was discovered that the tracks would not dig into the ground enough, and the tank would stall

I bet that must have been a fun outfit to drive for. Stuck in a tank in a river
