Im currently on a patrol to sector AD52 - Denmark straight, to see if I can pick up any convoys going to Russia. So im going along to the south of Iceland, and i've been buzzed by at least 5 air patrols of Ansons:damn: . Iv'e managed to survive them all (so far), and have only taken minimal damage. My flak crew are completley useless, as they cannot shoot them down so I resort to diving - which is risky with my type IX/B.

The moral of this, is that I will be avoiding this area the a long time, and instead I will be going down to Port of Spain instead.

Wish me luck on my return trip to base!

Try running decks awash and you will take a shorter time to dive espicially in a big IX

Might try that - thanks for the tip:up:

Yup, decks awash will cut your diving time by about 13-20 seconds.

Depending on what year it is, in Port of Spain area you get Catalinas and B-24s to harras you. :eek:

B-24 drops so many bombs, one is sure to hit you!

what year is it? you maybe better off submerging during the day as long as possible and coming out at night.

Im currently in 1941, but I've now completed the patrol and did not have any more air attacks. This was because I managed to stay out of the Ansons patrol range.

Wait 'till '43. You'll be lucky to get a breath of fresh air then.....

Hello, i'm still a noob. Could you tell me what is decks awash? and how can i perform it?

Decks awash means that you only have your conning tower above the surface of the water when you are running on the surface - set a depth of about 7-8metres - i know u can do this with the GWX mod.

Cheers

Make sure you do not make your depth 8m or greater as this will close the hatches and you can't have crew on deck and therfore lose your Mk1 eyeball sensor.

By the way, can I do that in stock SH3?

Hi alamwuhk2a
,
Yup you can do it, and the wonderful guys here showed me how. Below is a copy of the instructions I received, (I think from Mush Martin).
It also shows how to raise the max wind speed at which you can man your deck and flak guns (from 7 to 11m/s) which is especially useful with the crappy vanilla SH3 weather!

I would personally say that Decks Awash is one of the most important things you can have to save yourself from PAIN when the planes come. Makes a massive time difference - especially with a type iX.

You need to edit the subs cfg
Example the 7b

C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\Submarine\NSS_U boat7b

Open the cfg file in notepad

[Properties]
PeriscopeDepth=12;meters
SnorkelDepth=10;meters
CrashDepth=70;meters
MaxDepth=300;meters
SurfaceDepth=5.8;meters <------Change to SurfaceDepth=8;meters
TorpLaunchMaxDepth=20;meters
StormConditions=7,0.1;max wind speed [m/s], max rain intensity [0,1] <--- Change to StormConditions=11,0.4;max wind speed [m/s], max rain intensity [0,1] to allow DG use in rougher seas

Then save
You will need to do that for each uboat

Now at 8 mtrs you are surfaced
Decks awash

Edited: Oh, by the way. This feature is already in the code for GWX for all subs (I believe?) so you don't need to change any files - just set the depth to 7 or 8 metres on the shallow depth gauge. Works brilliantly!!

Thank you very much! With the combat flag mod, it is very fantastic with the conning on the water only!

Watch your fuel consumption though it will increase due to the added drag of the boat.

If you want the best chance of shooting planes down, you need a petty officer trained as a flak gunner, and the more experience they get the better they seem to get (understandably). I've got 2, for my twin 20mm flak guns, and they can hit Spitfires. Not always, but often. I set them to fire at medium range once my officer is on deck (trained as a watchman helps, for early warnings), and often just leave them to it, cos i'm normally on the surface trying to take out ships with the deck gun, or the fighters/ bombers have been spotted too late to dive. Then wait till they've passed over and hope you haven't been hit by a bomb, and crash dive.
I'm running standard SH3, with a patch but no mods. Hope this helps, someone will correct me if i'm not doing it right i hope lol.

WELCOME ABOARD, roadhog!:sunny:

You're probably doing it just fine. The problem is that in real life the planes were much deadlier, and of course your life was on the line. Once you graduate to something like GWX2 you'll find that the best way to stay alive is run and dive. You'll also find so much cool stuff that you'll never want to go back, but that's all in good time.

Aye welcome aboard
There is no right or wrong way
The way that works for you is best

I rarely duke it out with aircraft
Only if I really have to - flat batteries usually or caught napping
Deeper is safer

Yeah in 1943 the aircraft become an intolerable nuisance when trying to exit the Bay of Biscay. I should know, I just returned from a patrol that started in January and once I got off the contour (where it goes shallow to deep) I got constantly harassed to the point where I could hardly surface for air let alone recharge the batteries! :damn:

Eventually despite the mandatory check with the sky scope I got surprised at night, and then the dreaded RWR warning and before I could crash dive I was bombed with heavy damage to the boat fortunately mostly repairable. The worst thing about that attack was the hydrophones were destroyed which made me blind while submerged for the rest of the patrol. :down:

Happily I scored 28,000 GRT and made it back to base safely thanks to atrocious weather which hid me from those nasty flyboys. :rotfl:

Guys seriously you're missing out on the action by running from the planes.

I got 15 kills in one mission here.. and I'm not finished.
I'm a noob so I play on low realism hence the high cargo kills and it may or may not help with radar but it's fun shooting the planes.

This mission would be impossible on high realism because I traveled to Mexico ~ AE. Real fuel loads won't take you far. Six B24s came from Tampa and missed me.

The Secret to Surviving is to turning your boat away from bogies when they are coming in(early), the targets get crazy when they have to turn, keep it circling but watch out for crashing planes, that calls for a quick turn the other way at times.. As soon as they start the approach turn the direction that is far from them. ie. If they are coming from 4 o'clock start your circle towards 10 o'clock. The drop point will be too early if you are full speed. Circling works well after they first dive.

Using the IXC sub you got 2 double 20mm and flak.
Make sure you have your guys ready on 20mm guns who have passed flack training. Using the flack you can hit the bogies in the cockpit or the belly as they fly over you, then turn & fire again.. The crew and I have killed entire groups as they passed by.

I've survived many b24 attacks with this method.

Hope this helps..
It's a blast... Stop running

It was fun til I ran out of ammo..

In stock, I got rid of deck gun to get type 4 conning tower sometime in 1943, cuz there were usually whole fleet of planes coming after me in coast of west France, reported too many planes down in my capitan log. I shot down so many planes in few hours, more than total of planes down by battleship Yamato or Bismarck ever made in their life time. I know it couldn't happen in real life, but I think German should have ought creative about using some kind of U-boats, mine layer U-boat perhaps, but only to carry many buoys with radar running on battery, drop one in each grid, for many grids as they can, to annoy planes. The planes would be wasting their fuel by keeping alternate their course, going after many empty threats, after all radar is like beacon for planes.
