View Full Version : Uboat front clasp
Hello again,
I'm on my 9th patrol and I am wondering when the rest of my crew gets the Uboat Front Clasp. I may have missed the opportunity, as I assign medals and rank through SH3 Commander.
Is there a specific exp points or number of patrols that will "open" the uboat front clasp to give to the crew?
Thanks for the help.
PS. If I've missed this how do I give them the uboat front clasp.(The time is summer 1940, and I'm playing GXW1.03 loaded via SH3 Commander)

SH3 will throw them at you from time-to-time, but please remember that in real life the U-boat Front Clasp was not established until 15 May 1944. As SH3Cmdr models itself off actual historical availability and award conditions, this means that you will not see the clasp available in SH3Cmdr until that date.
This is why, for those wanting historical medal and badge availability, it is recommended that they solely use SH3Cmdr to award medals and badges. Otherwise they'll have a crew of guys running around with clasps, German Crosses and U-boat badges in September 1939! If players don't want to observe historical availability, then they can continue to award through SH3 and ignore SH3Cmdr's subsequent suggestions.

SH3 CMDR solves this and many more problems.

I do use SH3 Commander, but in spite of this line (2=**This crewman has been awarded a U-Boat Front Clasp, however, the clasp was not established until 15 May 1944. [02]) in the Sh3 Commander files, I received the Front Clasp in 1940!
SH3 Commander allows me to remove this medal from my crew if awarded too early, but not (as far as I can see) from my own career file.
Is there a way to change the award dates in the files, to ensure this medal is not awarded to me before the historical date?
In the SH3 folder (path: ProgramFiles/SH3/Data/CFG/Medals)I find the following:
[AWARDED_MEDAL_0]
Idx=0
Cantity=1
[AWARDED_MEDAL_1]
Idx=1
Cantity=2
[AWARDED_MEDAL_2]
Idx=2
Cantity=0
[AWARDED_MEDAL_3]
Idx=3
Cantity=0
[AWARDED_MEDAL_4]
Idx=4
Cantity=20
and
[MEDAL_0]
Idx=0
Cantity=1
[MEDAL_1]
Idx=1
Cantity=2
[MEDAL_2]
Idx=2
Cantity=0
[MEDAL_3]
Idx=3
Cantity=0
[MEDAL_4]
Idx=4
Cantity=20
etc., but I don't understand enough about CFG [Idx? Cantity?] to know if changing anything there would help.
Any ideas?

No. There is no way to change medal/badge award dates to players in SH3 as SH3 is not programmed that way (maybe with the SDK :rotfl: - sorry, unrelated joke).
However, in some mods (like GWX, RUb, NYGM), the renown/tonnage required for such medals/badges is increased to "fudge" a later awarding date (and in some instances decreased for the opposite reason), but that's the best we can do without coding changes. This change has the effect in that instead of getting the front clasp after sinking 5,000 tons (stock), you don't get it until you've sunk 60,000 tons (GWX and prolly others too)...which for some players is still after the first few patrols anyway.
And I didn't think it appropriate to "autofix" player medals in SH3Cmdr due to the confusion/annoyance/whatever that it may cause some players who like seeing copious amounts of medals everytime they sink a trawler. ;)

Thankyou.
I wonder ... can I "fudge" it in the GWX files so that I only get this badge after 150,000 tons? :hmm: That might bring it in line with the historical date .....(the way I sail, anyway)

As an SH3Cmdr user, the best way is to open SH3Cmdr's "Static settings.cfg" file and edit the line:
MEDALS_CREW|SunkInPatrol=60000; TONNAGE, front clasp
to something like:
MEDALS_CREW|SunkInPatrol=150000; TONNAGE, front clasp
This will help.
NOTE: Do not edit Basic.cfg directly as the default SH3Cmdr setting of 60000 will simply replace your setting.

Thankyou much! :D
Lots of good info here. But currently at the top commander's screen, I have 200.(something) tons(58% realism). Since I've only awarded medals through the SH3 Commander Manage crew screen, I think I may have missed the opportunity, by not updating the awards at the main career page(the office) during post patrol.
I now check the awards offered post patrol to see if the front clasp will appear, but if historical inaccuracy will not let me do this until 1944, then there is no problem.
I was just afraid that I missed the opportunity to award the crew with the Uboat Front clasp.
I'm probably way off, historically speaking, when it comes to my crew with ranks and medals anyway, so no harm no foul.
I almost forgot, when the opportunity came to award the crew with the first uboat badge(in the awards page of SH3), SH3 Cmdr warned me of a historical inaccuracy, but I was able to give them out anyway. This is what led me to believe that I could give out the front clasp in the first place.
again thanks for the info
EDIT: my character, the uboat commander, already has the front clasp and its fall 1940.

As I said, if you award via SH3 (using its non-historical basis), all SH3Cmdr will do is warn you when it finds discrepencies. It will NOT take the medal or badge away UNLESS you press the "Auto-fix" button. Nor will it stop you from awarding via SH3 direct.
In summary:
-Use SH3 exclusively to award if historical accuracy is not important, and use SH3Cmdr to augment as necessary. Ignore SH3Cmdr suggestions.
-Use SH3Cmdr exclusively to award if historical accuracy is important
Now this is weird!
dec. 1940, Just got back from a patrol inwhich I sank the Nelson and an Aux. Cruiser, and a few other ships, and when I returned to port I noticed my crew obtained medals. Went to awards section and there before my bewildered eyes was a Uboat Front clasp and a German cross in gold!!!
I gave the german cross in gold to my XO and then the clasp to my engine officer.
Thanks for all the info regarding sh3 cmdr and all the availability dates.
I now know that I didnt miss something.
thanks again.
