While volunteering at the U.S.S. Batfish this summer (wish I was still there instead of back in colorado in school) but any ways while at the Batfish I was fortunate enough to call many WWII subvets my friends, that said on with the topic. While at the Batfish listening and talking to the subvet I learned that the maneuvering room and after torpedo room were the rooms where the STILL was lol that is the biggest reason we need those rooms modeled haha.
Anyways the subvets told me that the grain alcohol in the torpedoes were 190-200 proof grain alcohol, early on it was pure alcohol, and they distilled it, but when new torpedoes came out the bureau of ordinance put in a thing the subvets called "Pink Lady" that was highly poisonous, so the sub sailors started filtering out the "Pink lady" with about 4-5 pieces of fresh baked bread. If you guys want to hear any more stories I got to hear from the Subvets let me know, the two I talked with the most were on the:
U.S.S. Haddock
U.S.S. Seawolf
U.S.S. Devilfish
U.S.S. Mackerel
U.S.S. Loggerhead

Hum, I wonder what that stuff was. Nowadays they spike some alcohol with methanol, which'll blind ya. Doubt that would be filtered out by bread
