View Full Version : How are Generic Ships Randomly Picked?

Does anyone know how the simulation randomly picks the generic entry ships spawned in campaigns (GWX 1.03)? For example, if the simulation will be spawning a generic Type 102 British ship, how does it select the ship it will spawn?

With 11 or more Type 102 ships to choose from, there must be a method or order it uses to select the ships. It could be alphabetical based on EnglishNames or alphabetical based on Seafolder name, it could be based on tonnage of the vessel or based on some other dimension like speed, length, width etc. of the available ships.

Obviously, we would want this selection to be totally random to give us ample diversity in the ships we encounter. The reason I ask is that I've encountered a great deal of non-randomless lately and was wondering if I had done something in my setup to cause this. Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers

Campaign layers are done in seperate files one for scripted on for random
and one for land bases.

I believe in Random groups (which can exist in both rnd and scr layers)
are picked using just random number generation after a list of eligible
types by date and roster are qualified.

It has been my experience that random number generation often isnt random.
however I havent experienced that in sh3 but that doesnt mean your not right
it just means I havent experienced it.

however to point out , some of what you are experincing maybe actually
scripted not random, if it is Identical everytime (your target convoy)
I would suggest this is likely from scr. (historically important convoy?)
otherwise the actual selection process by the game after the compilation
of eligible units is a bit lost on me Im afraid.

you could verify by recording your location and time ingame and trying
to determine in editor the source (ie. scr or rnd ) thats a tedious process
though

There are a lot of named type convoys in GWX 1.03 still
Changed in 1.04

As to randomness
Seems the game does pick a selection of tonnages
Not sure how its done but even then in testing 1.04 I have found you can still get 5\6 ships of the same type in a 25+ ship totally randomised convoy

Thanks, guys, for these answers. I'll run a few more tests to figure this out. Cheers EmeAzul

I wonder, if not unlike the limitation that Ichy allegedly found with random skin selection, if there is an inbuilt limit on the number of units SH3 will choose from of any type at any time?

I mean, something *is* amiss, as evidenced by the selection bias of ships starting with letters higher up the alphabet.

An interesting observation that.

yeah,

it seems every time i get to spain i find at least 2 of the add-on empire freighters
and now in 1939, up above scapa flow i find a add on pyro ammo ship

also, it seems task fores aren't task forces at all, just convoys, i want bb's to shoot at, what gives
