someone posted a method awhile back for determining ship speed by timing how long it takes for a ship to pass through your crosshair. they also listed the lengths of all the ships. can't remember who it was.. but i found it useful to crosscheck my speed estimates.

so i whipped this together to keep from pulling out a calculator.

you must be at a reasonable AOB for it to be useful. even then, i wouldn't rely on this method soley. it should compliment your other methods.

note: in the time field.. it doesn't have to be whole seconds. (example: you can input 5.75 seconds)

This corresponds with reality. Precalculated tables were worth their weight in gold because of stress-induced errors when doing fancy trig calculations during an attack. Subs were full of cheat sheets for many occasions, providing instant and accurate information that made the difference between a successful attack and no attack at all.

I've never seen reference to this particular table in R/L, but they didn't have much specific information on Japanese shipping anyway and much of what they had was wrong, as tater has pointed out many times. I don't doubt that they could have at least derived rough speeds from this method.

How do you get it on the screen, when playing game?

a second monitor or a second computer (like a laptop) is your best bet.

if you have neither.. just pause the game and ALT-TAB to the desktop.
