Does anyone else remember playing Microprose's "Silent Service?" I played it on my Commodore 64 using a joystick.

Now that was a submarine simulation.

No offense meant by laughing, but the answer is an unqualified "yes" for a lot of us:

I'm pretty sure that was my first sub sim... enemy ships were black rectangles with a white square for a superstructure. Had lots of fun, but we've come a long way since!:arrgh!:

Microprose Silent Service II was my very first sub sim...I still have the package and the disks and everything! :yep:

Microprose had some amazing games for the old C64, alright. Among them, Silent Service and Red Storm Rising. Granted, two vastly different sub sims, but reflecting on Red Storm makes me think a Cold War "what if?" could be intriguing. Just because we were fortunate that hostilities never erupted between modern sub forces doesn't mean the sim would be boring, especially when you consider the technology that would be brought to bear. We never got into a hot air-to-air confrontation with the Soviet Union either, but it's surely been the basis for numerous successful air combat sims over the years.

Yeh, had it on C64. press T to launch a torpedo, G for deckgun. ;)

I had it on the Atari. Fond memories of that as it was the only game I ever played together with my dad, and play it we did! (I was always the XO)

No doubt it's the reason I'm here and into subsims today :D

Yep, I loved Red Storm rising too. It's amazing that you could evade those homing torpedoes just by ordering an emergency turn...

Its in French but it has some nice screenies for those "nostalgic" types

I drove my roommate in college absolutely bonkers with the "tick tick tick tick tick" the engine would make on high time compression.

Yes, I played it. It was my first sub sim game and it's why I'm still playing them. We've come a long way since.

Yep, Silent Service was my first subsim on the C64. I got Silent Service II for the Amiga and PC but was rather disappointed that land masses were not modelled in the second version of the game. If I remember correctly, in the second version you had to identify a ship from the manual to load the game, which was the basic anti-piracy protection that the game came with. Both versions are in my loft somewhere gathering loads of dust.

yeah i remember silent service very well, i spent hours on it and in a way miss it. sometimes it would load wrong and the torps would pass beneath the target everytime.

I hear you. They were a great gaming company, weren't they? I always knew when I bought a Microprose game it would be fun to play...I was never disappointed in their product.

Cant say I've even heard of it until now. Maybe its just because im a bit young (I was growing up when the Sega Genesis was released), but still.

I do remember my first Subsim being Aces of the Deep though. Me and my friend played that for hours on 0% realism :rotfl:

I was happy that SSII had aircraft carriers you could attack; as I remember the first one had only merchant convoys.

My disappointment was with the shoaling: In 1 water would change depth, but in 2 if it dropped you into a scenario with 100 feet of water, thats what it stayed until you escaped, or died. At least that's my memory from the Atari version.

Silent Service on C64 was my first subsim. Played it for hours. The second one was Red Storm Rising. I recall playing The Hunt for Red October too but it wasn't my favorite.

I remember Silent Service *very* well, moreso because as a young budding programmer, it was the first commercial product that I bought that "let me" view the source code. :arrgh!:

Game wise though, I vividly remember manoeuvring the white pixel to-and-fro across the map screen.

Actually, come to think of it, I *really* enjoyed it, like I did nearly all Microprose titles of the eighties (something about medals and ranks that I really enjoyed). I did hate the "what ship is this" copy protection though...

Hmmm, I might just fire up my C64 emulator and give Silent Service a burl.

Now you see him...

I played it on Atari 65XE. I loaded this game about 20 minutes by tape recorder (I had no turbo installed on Atari).

Thanks for bringing back a good memory! Loved Silent Service on the C64, I'll have to dig it out, it's around here somewhere. I also liked Submarine, an Avalon Hill board game. Wooden Ships and Iron Men, Panzer Blitz and Luftwaffe too, all good Avalon Hill games.

I remember it, that was the first game I bought with my brand new Commodore 64 Computer. I had it for many years and got rid of it a couple of months ago in working condition. I bought the first commodore computer, a commodore 2001, with 1KB of memory, a tape drive, keyboard and monitor, all in one unit back in 1979 for $1000. All it could play was a tape game of star trek. I played it for hours and hours.:arrgh!:

Gotta love the space in that yellow U-Boat command room. That must be the new square boats there rolling off the production line :D
