View Full Version : Lost careers question

I have read so many posts on this forum in reference to lost careers, but I haven't run across anyone who knows what happened.
finely finished my 6th patrol and was dam*ed lucky/happy to get back.. Had lots of awards & promotions for the guys. I gave everyone their due & shut-er-down & headed to work.
Now I'm back & looking forward to taking my freshly maintained crew & sub back on patrol number 7.
howerer, the game would not let me click on saved games & start where I left off.
I can't get to them...any on them.
I looked in the data file, but can't find anything... that could very well be that I don't know where they are..
Anyway, has anyone ever figured out where these lost patrols & the normal sequence of things are?
Or have I just lost them & have to start all over "AGAIN" from square one day one...
I've done this twice already & it is getting to me.
Perhaps I screwed up some way when I exited the game after doing the crew thing, but if so, I don't even know what I did wrong...
Always have two career names when you start a new career. For some reason saving when you have overwritten the "Player" career name causes the saves to not show sometimes when you restart SHIII. This is a stock bug and the workaround is simply to have another name in the list.

Your saved games should be in:
C:\Documents and Settings\your name\My Documents\SH3\data\cfg\Careers
Locate the folder with the name of your kaleun and add an 'x' after the name....that should work.
Alternatively, remove the folder with your save in and load then exit the game.....replace the folder and you should be good to go

I found that folder & put the "X" after my name. That folder was empty except for this 1st patrol that I had restarted though.
Those (already done) six patrols files must be somewhere.. I'm not a computer savy enough guy to sort that stuff out...
There must be a file somewhere where deleted or just lost files go to hide.
This is a bit frustrating knowing that sooner or later, after all time spent getting through this game, that your going to loose everything & have to start all over again...

You mean you wanted to continue your career, but accidentally clicked on 1st patrol? (means you delete patrol2-6).
If this is the case, and you have no backup, it means your career is lost for ever. :-?
I do regular backups of the SH3-folder in MyDoc.
But if you are using SHIII Commander, don't you need to save a part of that to get your saved career back working?
I've saved mine from My Docs SHII folder but they never worked again.

Hey Paajtor.
Nope. I did not click on the first patrol.
I went into the crew thing after a patrol. Did my thing with crew awards.
saved & exited the game & went to work.
When I came home & cranked up the computer my saved games was grayed out.
Nothing in the folder.
I had to start from day one again.
Anyway, it's gone & I'll get over it...maybe...
Exactly which folder do you back up? are there more then one? exactly what do you do & how would you replace some lost files later on when you loose things again.
It looks like someone else has had problems doing the backup thing also.
Thanks...

Hey Papa.
I´ve never had those probs myself. I think I would backup the whole SH3 folder under My Documents, there are some files containing your settings etc. in there.
One thought, when you leave the office to Main Menu and then exit the game, let it rest for a while in the Main Menu before you click exit and the same before you click Ok to exit the game. Only a couple of seconds, to let the game save before you go, it may help. I remember reading here of people getting blue screens when exiting the game too hastily and IIRC it was solved by giving the game those extra seconds.

Maybe you should check, if you have enough empty space left on your C-drive.
SH3-saves take quite allot of space, certainly with multiple careers.

On average, approx 2MB per patrol
If I remember right, JScones once said that inorder to save your career you needed to save something from SHIII Commander and put that back in there too to get it all to work again after a reinstall of SHIII and SHIII Commander. Only thing is I forgot what it was he said to save out of there.
I do know however that I've tried to get my old career going after a reinstall or HDD crash, but it would never run with just the My Docs/SHIII files needed that I had saved.

With GWX you'd need this:
GWX102+Cfg4SH3Cmdr

C:\Documents and Settings\<yourusername>\My Documents\Personnel Files ....those files are generated by SH3Commander.
Maybe that's what you're looking for.
Yeah, that's it Jim, and thanks.
Paajtor, Jim has it. That's what is also needed. If by chance SHIII Commander is uninstalled that file needs to be saved first inorder for the MyDocs/SHIII files to work properly. It might also be wise to copy them to someplace safe every once in awhile in case of a HDD crash. That's how I lost my best career.... HDD crash. And the last time was from an uninstall. Without those files I could never regain it seeing the SHIII Cmdr cfg file was gone.

K, rgr that.
You learned allot about the Book of Saves....the Grand Scheme of Saving Stuff...and last but not least, the ancient writings found in "Ta'che ichjs'oua jenekcha Kuho N'Zoa", which means wtf did I do wrong?.
