We have had plenty of problems with Bernard.
Now we have another problem: Kptlt. J.S. Balz, the pride of the Kriegsmarine.
Driven out of my skull, as a final measure, I ask you. Kaleuns to vote. I will take the results of this vote to the Fuhrer.

Herr Admiral,

he drives me nuts, but I say we keep him. Despite the level of arrogance in this officer, he sinks ships as assigned.

but, i have a feeling Balz will be getting what comes to him... we both know the odds are not in his favor.

I think Balz will have a humbling experience in the very least if he manages to survive, i think he is a young man who is just now getting his first taste of war. he will either learn to put his men before himself in all matters... or he will simply drown in the North Atlantic.

Without Balz where would the Fatherland be? Even though he is of the arrogant type, quite like a lot of the SS around here. He is at least running around the Atlantic getting rid of the hated Brits. He is not at home spying on his neighbors.
Although BDU has received a number of letters from a fraulein named Grecthen who has been inquiring as to his whereabouts, we see no need to bring him home....Send a message extending his patrol, and see if he can contain his crew long enough to sink a few more T2s................Respectfully Kapt Willi Luck

To all U-Boat Komandants.
Decision after Balz poll.

As you can see, the keep him option is slightly ahead of the shoot him. Then, the Hoochie-woochie factor creates a decisive majority in favor of keeping Balz.

Of course, BDU reviewed this case on strictly naval merit.
In command of the type VIIC U-53. Kptlt. Balz logged 8 patrols, 2 local training cruises and 6 combat patrols. He has never returned from patrol with less than 100,000 BRT to his credit. Presently he has accumulated a total of 712,622 BRT, no mean amount for a VII type U-Boat.

Balz has returned to Lorient today at noon. He reported a frustrating 26 day patrol with 5 torpedo failures, 2 premature explosions and 3 that failed to detonate. Nevertheless, his tonnage was 108,426 BRT.

Therefore BDU is basing U-53 & Kptlt. Balz in Lorient. Case closed.

Due to the abnormally long depth charge we sustained. Our response came in late:

"Although that Herr Balz is an upmost arragent and most times, annoying kalueen. This Kapt. believe that however insulted 1 person might feel about him, his arragance and self worship can be, with some skill, taken as quite humorous. That said, I believe BdU should continue to supply him with all the duties and privlages of his rank. What is more, he wages a very successfull submarine war."
