Every time I try to install GWX.exe I receive this message.

"Setup identified the following problem(s) with the selected folder:
-Key GWS files were not found. this patch must be installed over a copy of Silent Hunter III containing GWS (with or without existing hotfixes). Please ensure that the selected installation has GWS installed before continuing.

Click OK when are ready to continue.
IMPORTANT! Not correcting the problem(s) now may result in game crashes or other unexpected behaviour!"

Now foregive me if this sounds lame to you all, but what am i doing wrong. I'm new to this forum and the silent Hunter series games. By the way I'm in my early fifties too and just brought silent hunter III & IV.

Sounds like you are attempting to install GWX103.exe, which is the patch for GWX, not GWX itself.

In other words, you need to d/l GWX.exe, the five GWX.bin files, and install it first. ;)

Hi Lancey, are you using broadband or 56k modem?:D

Step one: You must be using a clean, fresh, un-modified version of SH3

Step two: You must be using a version of SH3 which has been patched to version 1.4b, you can tell what version you are using by looking at the initial game loading screen. it will say in one of the lower corners.

Step three: If you require patch version 1.4b, acquire it here... http://www.silent-hunteriii.com/uk/updates.php ...make sure you download the correct version, for example if you purchased the DVD version in the United States, download "Patch 1.4b US DVD" if you DO NOT require this patch, skip to step four. ;)

Step Four: Create a folder on your desktop and name it "GWX"

Step five: go here... http://danlisa.files-upload.com/files/222273/GWX.exe ...and download "GWX.exe", make sure the file downloads to the folder on your desktop called "GWX"

Step five: Go here... http://danlisa.files-upload.com/files/222378/GWX-1.bin ...and download "GWX-1.bin", make sure the file downloads to the folder on your desktop called "GWX"

Step Six: go here... http://danlisa.files-upload.com/files/222502/GWX-2.bin ...and download "GWX-2.bin", make sure the file downloads to the folder on your desktop called "GWX"

Step seven: go here... http://danlisa.files-upload.com/files/222585/GWX-3.bin ...and download GWX-3.bin, make sure the file downloads to the folder on your desktop called "GWX"

Step eight: go here... http://danlisa.files-upload.com/files/222702/GWX-4.bin ...and download GWX-4.bin, make sure the file downloads to the folder on your desktop called "GWX"

Step nine: go here... http://danlisa.files-upload.com/files/222822/GWX-5.bin ...and download GWX-5.bin, make sure the file downloads to the folder on your desktop called "GWX"

Step ten: go here... http://files.filefront.com/GWX103exe/;8061398;;/fileinfo.html ...and download "GWX103.exe"

Step eleven: open the folder you created on your desktop called "GWX" and run the file "GWX.exe" a setup wizard will guide you through the installation process.

Step twelve: Open the folder you created on your desktop called "GWX" and run the file "GWX103.exe" a setup wizard will guide you through the installation process.

Step thirteen: run Silent hunter 3 by double clicking on the "Silent Hunter III- GWX" icon which has now appeared on your desktop.

Step fourteen: enjoy the mod

Step fifteen: create a post telling us what you think, and be sure to tell the GWX DEV-team how much you enjoy their hard work and dedication to this endeavor!

Good luck

Sink them all!!! :arrgh!:

Broadband.

I've just downloaded the 5 bin files and GWS. exe files.
do I put these files in a folder by them selves?
Thanks for all this help.

thanks GoldenRivet. quite simple when somebody shows you.

GoldenRivet,

When you say 'Un-modified" v 1.4b, will it still work if I have 'modded' some of the data (eg: storm levels and Deck Gun ammo quantities') - or must I roll back to a COMPLETELY 100% standard v 1.4b ??

As the developer of the GWX installers (core and patches), I can tell you that they take an heuristic look at your selected SH3 installation and in conjunction with the GWX changes, determine whether what you have is modified enough to upset the smooth running of GWX should the installation continue.

Of course, like any heuristic technology (ie virus scanners) they get it wrong from time to time, but they get it right much more often.

With this in mind, my suggestion is, as the instructions say, ensure that your installation is clean and unmodified. This will *guarantee* total compatibility.

im pretty sure it has to be straight out of the box, then patched to 1.4b.

you could always try it and see if it will work. but i dont think it will.

I also highly recommend downloading and using SH3 Commander.

The program can be downloaded here... http://www.subsim.com/subsim_files/patches05/SH3Cmdr27.exe

When you launch SH3 Commander you can...

- create a new career to be loaded within the game
- the program will create a history for your commander
- it will keep up with his patrol to patrol stats
- it will allow you more options for crew medals and promotions
- randomization of escort ASDIC depths to simulate "thermal layers" and it changes every time the game is loaded so you never know where the thermal layer is!
- allows the player to create slight modifications such as deck gun reload times, sabotage and malfunction options etc
- Creates an entire backstory for you commander, birth date, city of birth even what he came to do after the war if you survive :nope:
- fully GWX compatable

Stop by the "Silent Hunter III Mods Workshop" forum and check it out... tons of talented modders over there turning out products it seems like every other day!

I would prefer that users get it from my webpage, http://jonesoft.jaennahre.com

This location *always* has the latest version of all my software, including SH3Cmdr and JSGME.

JScones and GoldenRivet,
Thanx very very much for all your advice. I really appreciate the effort all of you guys make - so that the rest of us can have so much fun.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled a TOTALLY clean SH3 v 1.4b, and am currently watching the little blue bars as I download all the GWX and SH3 Commander files !
Should be finished by about Sunday night - and will try to install exactly as per your recommendations , onto my Intel Apple iMac.

Will let you know how it goes - and how long I survive on the 1st carreer patrol!!:-)

Again, wonderful support from everyone on this superb forum,
Happy Huntin'

no worries

as long as you start out in '39 your going to be fine, dont really have to worry much until you cross over into 1943... after that your odds are pretty historically accurate as far as the chances of surviuval go!

good luck :arrgh!:
