My karma it seems, is catching up with me.

 The whole damn pacific, and they give me THAT area. I'll post how it went later.

edit:

So i arrive at the entrance to the bungo straits, and i noticed the weather turned favorable for me. Its almost 1300, and my navigator tells me the drop zone is 3 hours away. I decided to risk all on the weather holding out, and run in on the surface. I plotted a course near the western coast of the straights, and proceed at standard speed.

http://www.ducimus.net/sh4/tautog/p1-3.jpg
Depth under keel is 40 feet. If this weather lets up, i think theres a high likelyhood, im not making it out of here.

http://www.ducimus.net/sh4/tautog/p1-4.jpg
Off he goes. I put the boat in reverse, back out of the shoals, and plot a return course the same way i came in, but this time i go at FLANK speed.

http://www.ducimus.net/sh4/tautog/p1-5.jpg
While turning around to head out, i send off a radio message and get a response. My worst fear was being assigned further into the bungo suido area, thats why i let out the radio message now. Cause if i did have to go in further, im in a good position to do so, but the weather is changing, fast. But as it was, i got this assigment, and i got the hell out of there as fast as i could.

Sorry to let ya guys down, but no bungo pete encounter to pummel me. My plan is to take this boat to the end of the war (as the real Tautog did), but with the first assigment to the bungo straights, i thought "well, maybe this aint happening", but on the other hand. maybe ill make it yet :D

Great to see you finally enjoying the game and getting some of the fear of death that TM puts in you. Now find some nice tankers and spend some American taxpayers' money sending them to Davey Jones' locker.

Success! *clink!*

NAW, no worrys about ole "Bungo Pete" in Dec. 1941. He is still picking an
elite crew and outfitting his ship with sensors that haven't been invented yet.
But I don't recommend going back to the straits in 1942, cause he will be
WAITING !!

Good Deal Ducimus, glad to see you're actually playing the sim finallyl.

And as far as going to see Bungo Pete, it's called dancin with the devil. You put him there ... you have to face him.

As soon as this current career is over I'm installing TM 1.x and patch 1.3 and will be making a trip on purpose just to go see ol' Petey! :)

Like i said, when it comes to facing ole Bungo pete, you have to be crazy good, or just plain crazy.

I, am neither :88)

But i know how to avoid him. If i had too, i would have sat at the entrance to the bungo suido for 2 weeks until i got a warship contact that resembles his patrol route - and then let him pass by, and come in AFTER that contact leaves. Of course if im wrong and its not pete, id be in a big heap O' doo doo

My advice - stick close to the shoreline, running at 2 knots tops. Pray for crystal clear weather so you an snap photos from 6nm out. That is unless you're aware of subnets...

I tried that before back in patch 1.2. I quickly found theres shore batteries to contend with. I did alter my course though, i cut accross the shallows in the middle of the "U" in my orginal plotted course. 40 feet of water there, and i narrowly avoided TWO collisions there. Lets put it this way, heavy fog, mediem rain, and they were close enough to make out the meatball.

Im now laying doggo on the bottom in the deep section where i ended my course plot, waiting for the fog to break.

Ducimus, repeat after me: "I am a dead man, I am a dead man, I am a dead man...":rotfl: actually, it might be best to go in under cover of fog. less chance of being sighted by shore batteries, and anything else that will be there:ping:

With such horrible wheather I'd just sneak in for 10-foot snapshots of the moored ships' hulls. If I had radar I'd simply barge in at flank speed then come to a halt and submerge when within 1nm of shore.

But it's safer to just wait... CO2 permitting.

It is my best chance. One, small little problem though......

I'm there to take recon photo's, and i can't see anything that isnt within 30 feet of me!

Just be glad of all the help you are doing the war effort. When (if?) you get home in X weeks, the data will be totally useless. Besides, they know where the ships are from sigint and MAGIC. This is somebody screwing with you. Did you steal a girl form one of your seniors at the Academy?

Well, i got impatient, i took this photo around 1300:

http://www.ducimus.net/sh4/tautog/recon_photo_1.jpg

How's that for some "valuable" intell eh?! Im not gonna tell you how close i was, you really don't want to know.

After that, i decide to back out into the deep part, and extricated myself (biting my nails, and s***ing kittens the whole way), out of Tojo's footbath! Sent off a report, and now im enroute to patrol around Iwo Jima.. thats fine by me!

My first patrol sent me to the Bungo Straights (aka "the graveyard"), my second patrol sent me to Tokyo bay, (I dub thee, "Tojo's footbath",) good greif, wheres patrol number 3 gonna send me?

In both patrols my saving grace, was crappy weather. If the weather wasnt what it was, i dont think i'd have pulled them off.

Ah, wonderful area, isn't it? I recently did a photo recon of Tsurusaki. Stock 1.3, so no super destroyers to worry about. The good thing was that the weather was pretty bad, so I could sneak in easily. Unfortunately, it rapidly worsened, and visibility was near zero when I got near the harbour. I decided to wait near the bottom for a day. Still no improvement the next night, got impatient, and went in anyway. I was worried about colliding with the ships before I could see them. I could see their crew's faces in the periscope when photographing them (and one of them started shooting a machinegun at my periscope).

When leaving, the same terrible weather continued. I collided with a destroyer on the surface a few seconds after the watch crew spotted him. No direct hit, but sides sliding past each other. He did not attack me (probably couldn't aim his guns that low) and I finished him with three HE shots, after that he exploded (those fireballs look even more impressive when you're almost under them). While escaping at flank, I also killed a subchaser that came very close (took more work than the destroyer) and a merchant (almost collided with that one too - pretty busy area there).

Are there any mods that make the mission locations a bit more reasonable?

Of course. Real men look forward to Tokyo bay visits ;)

Still, when I got an assignment to insert an agent pretty far into the Yellow Sea, I think I was lucky I had fuel restrictions disabled. If I remember correctly, that was using a Porpoise class... That was at the height of the Japanese expansion, the closest port was Midway. Someone doesn't want to see me coming back
(my fault for picking a P-class I guess)

In fact, the only mission so far that didn't look like an attempt by COMSUBPAC to get me killed was a patrol in the Marianas. Didn't encounter any enemies at all. When I finished and reported, they sent me to another spot in the Marianas. After that, back to the first patrol spot, still without contacts. Then I decided to leave and visit Rabaul.

How exacty do you change a mission assignment once it's given? I just got the same one twice in a row.... completed it the first time and really don't feel like doing it again :).

BTW, I've already deleted the saves previous to entering port... so rolling back to the end of the previous mission and docking again is not an option. I'm hoping there's something I can edit...?

Thanks.
