Not sure this feature has been completely hashed out,After making this post,http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=619660&postcount=10, & getting Leo's descriptive responce,http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=620748&postcount=11, some how this feature might be modded,to make less risky to report contact. With the IJN/AI having infrared night vision,there is noway even at nite to send report without being spotted. One might think Radar contact,might be enough to allow report to be sent.IMO that would seem more practical. Opinions requested,& is there any incentive to report ? or do we just do it at our own risk,to get orders to RTB at descression,when low on fish.Also,it dosen't seem to complete mission,these two features are not connected.

Owwwkay,

I send a contact report as soon as I encounter a vessel...

Weirdness though, I never received any RTB message, not even after I finished 3 missions (and report them in) in 1 patrol.

I've started numerous new campaigns due to all the great mods which I want in game to enjoy it to the fullest... (Always seem to be on patrol when they're released :shifty: ) Anyway, non of the messages had a RTB in it..

Maybe that's why I get retired after 1 patrol some times :hmm:

(Last partol: 5 mission... reported in and never got a RTB however I'm still Capt. of the Subafter docking at Pearl.)

I never send a contact report. Ever. OK, almost never. If I see a TF, and I cannot possibly end-around, THEN I will send a report.

<shrug>

Real US submarines operated under very strict radio silence. Reports were rare period, rarer still in enemy waters. When the USN started experimenting with 3 boat "wolf packs" their largest issue was convincing the skippers to communicate at all even just using a 3 character code for reports and as few groups as possible---all this on low powered radios no meant to go terribly far.

In the case of TFs or other large groupings, US boats would attack FIRST, they only sent contact reports before attempting an attack when ordered, and a few times Lockwood ended up sending new orders for all boats not to misunderstand the need to report fleet movements with not attacking FIRST because he saw that once alterted, the TF turned away and the sub missed a chance at a sinking.

The game might not care, but I do and can't do it, lol.

I send reports sometimes, and have gotten messages saying the troop transports are priority; to sink the freighters because they think they're carrying vital supplies; or, if i'm out of torpedos, they say they'll send other assets to intercept and to RTB at my discretion.

I've only ever received the RTB message after radioing in a contact report when I had no torps left.

What I'd really like is a mod that didn't lie to me. If they say they're sending other assets to intercept, then they damned well should. I've tailed some of the convoys for a while but I've only once seen one get attacked.

I think this is reasonably realistic; the one which got attacked was near allied territory, while the others were well within enemy territory. But it would be nice if they didn't lie. It would also make the effort (and risk) it takes in order to send a contact report more worthwhile if you knew it would actually have an effect.
