After several messed up attempts at a patrol I finely finished one from start to end...lol..
the IIA boat out of Wilhelshaven to AN81. made the trip without mishap & just settled in for the night at periscope depth & waited for a merchant to come by.
one did & I sunk it.
Another came by but it was to fast & going away so I started back. I had another contact, but it sounded like a DD & the sea was very rough so I started for home...
I caught up with another coastal merchant along the way & sunk him also...

Things saved just like the manual says & this time I got credit for one patrol for all of lthe crew.

however, some questions I would like to ask...

1) When I ask for max range all I got was: "Maximum range at current speed is not available" didn't matter what the speed was.

2) going along with the above...The fuel gage did not move from the full mark during the whole trip. Left full & returned full..

3) My watchman from the start was in lthe crew quarters & I had to manually drag & drop him on the bridge each and every time I surfaced.

At the end after everything is saved & it took me back to the crew quarters a lot of the crewman were outlined in blue.
then it all went away except for the radio man. He was outlined in blue & then yellow...
I couldn't find anything on that in the manual...

Now the game keeps sending me & my IIA boat on patrols further away then the boat is supose to go...

Congrats!

I'll try to answer your questions, but i may not be right in all this.

1 and 2. It sounds like you do not have the limited fuel option selected in the realism options

3. That is unfortunately just something that we all have to put up with

4. The blue outlines on the crewmen mean that that creman is elligible for one of the medals or promotions that you have earned.

Select the chosen crewman, then drag the medal over him

And to extend range, run at less than standard speed.

You can also use SH3 commander to select your own patrol grids

after your patrol you also get to give one of your crew a skill like radioman or engineer

you can also do this before you start your next patrol but I don't think you can save up those upgrades and then add a whole lot after say 6 patrols so don't forget to give your crew some skills, if you started in 39 you're probably going to need to hand out a radioman skill first

When it comes to specialities, I go for damage control first. You may want to read: Strategies for Survival article on my webbie :D .

BDU are most pleased with you
It always feels good when you finish your first successful patrol.

As for patrol grids - you should get SH£ commnader, which enables you to set your own patrol grid.

Don't believe Brag, he's the German kamikaze ;)

Just kidding, everyone's different  I leave that speciality to the officers actually.

I always go for sonar (nothing beats a healthy green bar to pick up more and earlier contacts) or engines. I like to switch on and off between two boatsmen having the 'steering wheel' speciality.

The limited fuel option has a check in it.

I did try to award a radio skills to my sonar man, but it said that seaman couldn't be awarded that & then it put a "Flak" designation to a chief in my torpedo room.
heck, I don't even have a flak gun.
after that every thing was grayed out so I guess I lost any opportunity for any gain to anything...bummer.

I don't have any mods, Just the disc install 1.4b. When I try to install extra stuff it genereally doesn't work screws my whole game up.
I never know exactly where to put all of the pieces & the read-me's generally assume (incorrectly) thatknow where they go...lol...
There are so manny mods & I really don't know just what ones will be of benifit to my game play.

.

The nav officer isnt doing his job when submerged, he is a lazy Bayern ;) If ure afloat on the service and the diesels are running the nav officer will tell u the maximun range for the diesels.

Finely! I finished my 2nd patrol & was able to get the Type: IID boat.
My 2nd patrol was clear up at scapa Flow...Isn't that a bit beyond its range?
Anyway, I cruised at ahead slow or 1/3 at the most.
The weather was really nasty, with high seas & rain, fog & lightning flashing about.
The thunder was impressive until my daughter told me this morning...Dad, "wasn't that a loud thunder storm we had last night during that massive downpore around midnight...

Ha ha... I thought it was the game...danged if I didn't...

I didn't try to save either 1 or # 2 patrol this time, I just let them run all night finished them this morning..(my day off) so I didnj't loose them.

I did a repair of SH 3 from the disc yesterday so I'm hoping things will save like they supose to...

This IIA/D sub has been a real "shake down cruise" for me. I've just been trying to learn as much as possible along the lines of what the sub will do.

1) manual says it should dive in 25 sec...I can't get it under the water in less then 60 sec.. Even crash dive & then just as it starts down I hit pereiscope depth due to 27 m of water under me...

I still can't figure the angles or tell how far anything is by the hydrophone. but I'm having fun...
