Oh, and this was a flawed propeller that was ment to be discovered by "accident". And Neals probably part of this smart deception operation.;)
Now no one knows the truth.

As a former US Submariner, im blown away to seeing this image and more pissed to those who took it and had the balls to post it on the internet. Why not take a picture of other countries hardware then our own.

I wish our Government would be tougher on things like this.

Is there no more pride in the US military and tying to keep our secrets safe?

Even if it was a setup, we got countries like China, ex-Russia and others still going after our most coveted secrets to bring us down.

People should be hung.

Don't Russia, China, etc. have their own surveillance satellites? I'm assuming they don't rely on Microsoft and Google for intelligence. The fault seems to me to lie on the dock workers, who should know better than to leave the prop unshrouded in the middle of the yard.

Don't Russia, China, etc. have their own surveillance satellites?Yes. Do they have any that work? No:p.

As a former US Submariner, im blown away to seeing this image and more pissed to those who took it and had the balls to post it on the internet. They probably had no idea it wasn't meant to be uploaded. Doesn't keep them from asking politely first, though.

Am I the only one here taking into account the theory that there is nothing worth to be hidden, maybe? Maybe that propeller is not half as cool as many here seem to think.

i dont see the deal with a propellor its widely known thats how a ship goes if it was a water jet or something then yeah maybe.

There has been library of books written on prop design. I had about three or four hours of instruction on the subject (Excluding shaft design/arrangement), and the only thing I truly understood in the whole thing is "Propeller hits stuff = REALLY EXPENSIVE"

A propeller isn't just how a ship goes. It affects how fast it goes, how much it can pull, how it'll manoeuver, how much it vibrates and how quiet it is. But I'm pretty sure that picture is nothing the russians haven't seen; propellers are big, external and interesting, after all.

Sounds intresting note to self look up propellor design.

Reminds me of the huge flap back in the early '60s when Renwal and then Revell released models of the original George Washington class boomers...with interiors. The government complained, investions were launched, and the rest of the people said "Oh, come on! Like the Russians didn't know already?":rotfl:

Kap ,next time you go to an airport have a look at the propellor design of most modern turbo-props.The design is very similiar!!

I think you are correct. These navy people aren't stupid. The cover was left off for a reason.

Like this one (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=plymouth,+devon&sll=29.334195,-94.778857&sspn=0.001754,0.002494&ie=UTF8&ll=50.386902,-4.189173&spn=0.001283,0.002494&t=k&z=19&om=0)mate?

Compare with her sister ship in the top left, where you can't see through the water. That's he disadvantage of using a tidal basin I suppose, the water is clearer and calmer.

Propeller shrouding is a ritual within submariners worldwide. Similar accident happened with a 212A in Kiel last year.
The propeller looked exactly the same, so at least HDW doesnt need Microsoft Earth or whatever.
But maybe the Propeller design will be copied for Paul Allen's private submarine?

Yeah, it's kind of hard to work on a propeller or inspect a tailshaft when there's a tarp over the wheel...

I suppose the tarp also helps protect the screw from the elements, and the usual dry dock precipitation (Paint, blasting grit, etc)

Well, I am thinking that maybe the US of A doesn't really care much? That prop looks of old design. Not as angled as newer props. Then again, it has been probably 5 years since I've seen one. The one on this photo looks like the same exact design as you would find in any movie or even in DW.

Regardless, the new prop design is in shrouds, and I have no idea what that prop looks like. I have three (or soon will have 3) Seawolfs in my neck of the woods now, so maybe I will get to check one of those out in drydock at some point in the near future.

I think you'd have to get a lot closer to determine some really useful information on it, yes knowing how many blades it has can help in determining its signature, but I imagine that was hardly unkown to the world's navies.

Unless of course you have some of that mythical CSI-style software that you get in movies where the detective shows a 22 dpi image of a crime scene and asks the lab people 'Can you enhance that for me?'

Lab person: 'Yeah, I think so, let me see what I can do...'' Cue electronic zooming bleeping noise, and suddenly we can see the rivets, machining marks and sacrificial anodes on the sub's screw at 1500 dpi, all beautifully colour-corrected!

Now we can see that the US Navy have simply stolen one of the airscrews off an ATR-72-500 and turned it around. Ha ha!

Come on Adobe, why can't Photoshop CS3 do that!!! - B*st*rds!

Its not a big deal - shrouds are the future. America has abandoned straight props like this - it is 30 + year old tech. With a shroud, you never need a cover anymore because you can't see in it (from above that is), and you already know it has a shroud.
