Yesterday i was attacking a small convoy. There were only two merchants. I sank the second one in line and fireed a homing torpedo at the leading one. It completely missed so i surfaced and attacked with my deck gun. All of a sudden i hear TORPEDO IMPACT! and my sub shakes violently. the back end of my sub was ripped open. i have a picture but i don't know how to access it.

Hey man, that happened to me too a couple of weeks ago. It was right after I installed a new version of some mod; sorry but I'm constantly upgrading my installation so I don't remember which one. Anyway, it was mentioned in the readme file that some torps may go stupid and start a circular pattern. Now, it didn't hit me but it came real close. I noticed it on the attack chart (F6) and I said, "WTF?". It freaked me out but I high-tailed it outta there and thought, "That got my attention. Cool!" Regards, Zeke.

Circular runners are in the stock game as well.
Been there since ver. 1.0
I think the mod just increases the possibility.
Keep your eyes and ears open.
I just wish the soundman would notice a torpedo running right at us :hmm:

Welcome to the infamous circle runners:yep: Happened in RL and happens in the game;) I have not had one yet but I'm sure you were surprised. A nice touch would be the sonarman screaming out "CIRCLE RUNNER". No dice,he just sits there looking like it is a day at the beach.

AWWww you can't blame the Sonar guy as he was looking at this lovely ladies picture which is probably above the SJ screen somewhere.

OK, got me there. He is obsolved of all blame...sadly the plotting team was looking at the pin also and they rammed a DD:oops:

I was playing cooperatively with my friend and I had a circle runner incident. It sucked. We were obviously having an unspoken tonnage contest with a large convoy, so we were crunching fire solutions and letting rip on one target after the other as rapidly as our poor torpedo crew would allow. I normally keep track of firing times and all that..... And so after firing all my forward torpedoes, I am manuevering forward to get an aft shot on some other ships.
In vanity mode I see an arcing ripple on the water. "Huh, that's strange. What's that?" A torpedo. My torpedo. I thought, geez, what are the odds that I happen to be going the right speed and still the right direction to intersect with it? Apparently not as slim as one would think. I tried to dive deeper and zig against it, but it was just moving too fast compared to my max speed of 8 knots. BAM!!!! Right in the back of the conning tower. I immediately emergency surfaced and went ahead flank away from the convoy, with destroyers in pursuit.
Good thing I was playing with a buddy who helped me break clear. Even after repairs I couldn't go to periscope depth without flooding beginning. I didn't have any periscopes intact anyway. I eventually attacked from a distance again with decks awash and ended up surviving, but I was lucky as hell. I definitely would have been cooked had some aircraft shown up, or even a couple of competent destroyers once I was out of torpedoes. Diving was out of the question.

I had a circle runner once, missed my conning tower by about a metre or so lol, very scary stuff. Thing is I would never have known about it if I didn't have external camera enabled.

The first homming torpedo I used came back at me and sunk me. Last time I use those little buggers :damn:

when did homing torpedos come into play?
The Mk27 is a homing torp. It is overpowered though. It shouldn't have the explosive power it has in stock. When firing, your sub should make almost no sound => running silent and preferably deep.
It was designed to give some troubles to persuing DD's. It should have been capable of taking a rudder or propellor out. Sinking a ship with it is very doubtfull with the actual explosives they carried (49 lb TPX).
Also, they only could make 12 knots.
It was ment to be a last resort torpedo.

It's about the same in the game.

I've found that when useing the "homers" , thats it's best to load them in the stern tubes (at least thats what I do) Any way fire them at "all stop" (no engines running) and then head down to 150 feet or so (just sink) and then give it a little bit after all they only travel at 12 knots (very slow) compared to the other torps (in the 30's-40's knot range) ...The reason being is the homing torps "lock on" to the loudest sound ...so the more quite your sub is the safer you'll be ... Hope this helps .... :hmm:

I had a circular runner yesterday. It made 2 loops around me before I could get away. It was in the fog and I was between a couple of freighters so I was screwed for turning away easily. It made its loops missed all the ships and me. I'm not sure what happened to it in the end.
Yeah nice if the soundman said something.

I had a circular runner that prematured about 20yds from my boat...talk about a wake up call. And I was wondering where that torp was too, since the others in that spread had either hit the target or just missed. (Fired 4,had two hits, one miss and a lost torp that wouldn't stay lost...lol).

From books I've read, the sonarman was instructed by the Captain to listen to all torpedoes as they were fired. The main reason was give warning of a circle runner.
What you wanted him to report was that the torpedoes were running "Hot, straight and normal". Anything else would increase the pucker factor...
It would be a nice touch if this was modelled in game
