You haven't watched the film. If you think your pseudonym is hiding enough, you are totally wrong. Your IP is out there. It is enouh to identify you, loink your identity to profiles of habits and behaviuors you showed duzring shopping, credit card transaction, queries, internet behavior, eventually your movement patterns inside accordingly equipped stores, etc.

Or do you want to tell me that you can manually find and delete all those tens of thosuands of data bits abiujt you that you have left behind so far? not even talking about that certain companies intentionally hide from you the fact that they have a file about you, or that they actively try to resist to delete that data.

Etc etc etc. Just think about it. It is a nightmare. Trying to deal with that in private only leaves you stranded and lost in a giant desert. You have no chance.

Or do you not interact with your bank and governmental offices? No credit cards? Cellphones? IP numbers of your PC? Payback customer cards?

Every key entry you entered into a Google query is stored by Goggle.

In ten years maybe yo are rejected a job, because ten years earlier you have made a picture query for "young chicks", and your future employer has requested a service company to collect your personal iunformations and records from the internet. you will always be identified by your IP. You will even be identified by hidden information your prinbter is printing on every leaf of paper, and crossrefering that information to data from commercial customer data collected at other opportunities.

Then at the latest you will stop making jokes and see the immense threats and dangers from this madness.

Again guys, watch that film. It is about total control, total absence of private sphere, your personal data including access codes, PIN codes, insurance numbers, etc, being available to anyone paying for the service - legally.

They didn't say it, but I say it: if you think it to the end we are talking about nothing else but most total totalitarianism erected both by state and commerce.

Google is just a minor story in the film.

It's a shame there isn't a international personal data protection agreement.


However, it's not a dire problem as long as you are aware that what you do online; you do in public.

If you want to do or say things that you dont want anyone to know about, now or in the future then don't do them online or if you must do them on line than make sure your connection is as secure as it can be.

edit: Going online is much like walking down a street with a man behind you writhing down everything you do and handing out his observations to who ever will pay for them. It is oppressive and threatening!
The problem is; the streets (Web pages) are not public streets, they are owned by someone (google, subsim etc). That means you are not in a private place online!
If someone walks onto my lawn and says "hello Letum!" I have every right to write that down.
I do not have the right to follow them around public places or other peoples lawns and record their activities, and that isn't generally done online either.

You said you have seen the film. Most of what it is about - is not about online activities, but every day life.

the new air passenger data delivery agreement between the US and europe is active now. A set of three dozen data including banking accounts, credit card numbers, food habits (religion!) etc is demanded by the Us, will be stroed for many years - and n either the EU nor the porivate little self of yours has any control or image of what this data is being done with, where it lands, if it really will be deleted (110% not!) and into what further channels it is feeded. american data protection laws are not en par with what we have in several european countries (although in some respect german laws sometimes are even exaggerated). and once (from an American persopective) your private data has landed at a third party, the fourth amandement of the constitution does no longer cover the protection of private sphere, as they described close to the end of the film.

European business companies where reported in recent months to have reduced their business-related traffic into the US for this reason, and statistics show that the businiss traffic with many airlines flying into the US in fact already has slighty decreased. I must admit for me these new demands by the Americans are a top reason never to travel into the US in the future, even if I would get the trip for free. the argument of "if oyu have nothing to hide you miust not fear" I do not buy for principle reasons. the same was said in the third Reich. And by that argument you can claim that nothing is wrong with a fascist or totalitarian society as long as only you love your Führer.

A personal antecdote... if you google my name (with my first initial, to differentiate from the other fatties out there), lots of good and flattering things come up... pages for academic awards and published papers and whatever. Cool right?

Googling my girlfriend, however, one of the top results is some girl's blog whom she played with on a sports team five plus years ago. The blog page says some pretty mean things about my girlfriend's team spirit - that she is a loner, doesn't get along with anyone on the team, etc. etc. Possibly true five years ago, I don't know, but the fact remains that it's in plain view of everyone who has ever been curious.

I keep my personal website and Facebook page neat and tidy, knowing full well that important people may look at them. If I am against a candidate of equal skill and experience, and I craft a professional-looking networking page and I am chosen over the other guy because he has photos of him and his buds smoking fatties on his site, can anyone say he really deserved the job over me?

As far as job screening based on searches, I don't know if many companies can afford to do this. In my region, unemployment is at a 30 year low and many businesses are understaffed. I think they would be hard pressed to stay in service if they started to filter out any employees who ever had browsed internet porn or whatever.

Still, it IS pretty creepy.
