View Full Version : REUTERS does it again...
http://newsroom.finland.fi/stt/showarticle.asp?intNWSAID=16424&group=General
News agency Reuters used an image originating from the Hollywood blockbuster film Titanic as a photo of the Russian polar dive last week, Finnish tabloid Ilta-Sanomat reported Thursday
Just saw this on paper today, there was a comparisation of the Reuter's 'photo' and a pic from the Titanic. Apart, from the Reuter's photo being fuzzier, it was the EXACT same pic. Good Job, Reuters! :nope:
Reuters were a pain in the ass whenever I had to deal with them when I used to work for a newspaper, I always preferred AP. But I can't believe they did this! Well, come to think of it, yes I can:rotfl:

It would be great if these news sites actually showed a picture.

The news also say that the 'Titanic' photo is 2nd false photo from Reuters from the Russian's journey. This has been confirmed by Reuters itself. :rotfl:

That looks alot more like the movie "The Abyss" to me...

Nah, it's from "Titanic". It's in the beginning of the movie when they dive in on MIRs and find the Titanic.
So is this retuers or the russians fault?

REUTERS says it got the pic(s) from Russian TV broadcast, but they should have checked them.
So, I think it's safe to say that the blame goes for both.

Another case of don't believe what you see in the papers!
When you dont want to get caught using images, you use an image from one of the most succesful and popular films of all time. Everyone knows that.
Small update:
Reuters regrets misleading caption of sub clip
10.8.2007 at 7:25
Reuters told the Finnish News Agency (STT) on Thursday that its news footage of last week's Russian polar dives was misleading.
The news agency had sent a clip lifted from a Russian state television broadcast purporting to show Finnish-made Mir submersibles diving to the seabed 4.3km below the North Pole.
A Finnish schoolboy and film buff, 13, having seen a still of the footage printed by Ilta-Sanomat in its Friday issue, emailed the tabloid saying the shot was a spitting image of a scene from Titanic, the Hollywood blockbuster.
Reuters said the location information of the footage was incorrect, adding the craft seen in it had been looking for the wreck of RMS Titanic. But the agency would not comment on claims that the source of the images was the Oscar-winning film.
Mirs were used to shoot RMS Titanic for the 1997 film telling the tale of the 1912 sinking.

Also, another photo of the dive, where one of the MIR submarines is viewed from behind seems to be 'misleading'. The surface photos of the MIR 1 & MIR 2 show that the submarines have text written on their sides and extra propellers in the rear. The REUTERS' photo doesnt show text nor the extra propeller on the submarine.
Oh and back to the 'Titanic' photo. The best part is, that the 2 submarines are miniatures and they arent even underwater in the photo. This can be confirmed by watching the Titanic DVD's extras. ;)

To their defense, I wouldn't have thought of this either. I can just picture the Reuters desk going, 'OK, now let's watch all Hollywood blockbuster movies out there which feature submarines to see if the Russkies have stolen this from one of them, thinking no one will find out. After all, it's not like millions watched that movie! Yeah, we definitiely need to check this'. I mean, you have to admit it's slightly improbable:p.
Well, the answer to you SK, is pretty simple ( but we people never seem to think simple), there was only TWO subs that went down there (MIR 1 & MIR 2), so who took the photo of the 2 subs together???
Also, there was an interview of an finnish guy who has been training mini-submarine crews since 1984 and he said that when only two subs go that far down, only the other will go all the way down, the second one will stay slightly upper incase of an emergency.
