well i played sh4 a few times and maybe i gave up too easy so i uninstalled it. i am considering trying again. the one thing that made me get rid of it was that i reached my destination and was told i had to sink merchant shipping, well i waited for like 1 week and didnt see a single bleeding ship, so how on earth are you supposed to finish the mission? if i returned to port it would say mission failed and i would have to start all over again.

The task of 'sink enemy shipping' means just that. Sink enemy shipping anywhere anytime.
You do NOT have to loiter in the area once the star turns grey.
In the meantime here is a link you may find helpful

Try this:

In your case, get to your objective, and then you can basically wander off anywhere on the map and sink merchants - I know I did. Keep sending in status reports, and when you add up the mission tonnage you'll get a new objective or be allowed to return to base at your discretion if you're out of torps.
Happy hunting!
edit: aw man - beaten to it....

Are you running any mods, there are some great ones out, check out Excalibur Bane's Sticky in the Mods Section, he has compiled a list compatible for SH4 V1.3.

A stupid question it a question not asked, all others arn't. :yep:
Now reinstall the game, patch it to 1.3, add some mod's if you want to and go sailing. :|\\

If you want to see lotsa Japanese merchant shipping, hang out near a major
Japanese base. You will need the "Reduced Air Traffic" mod to cut down the
number of planes but you will see plenty of shipping. I spent a week near
Rabaul in June 43 and got rid of all my torps sinking merchants. I sank 1 DD
but that was because the torp missed the merchant and hit it. 100,000 tons
on that patrol.....

PS: Also use the mod or change yourself the contact reporting, anything more than
100km away you don't need to have spawning. This also increases your close contacts
and makes less work for your cpu !!

Add-on dumb question by myself: There's a mod that will do that? Or is that part of a separate mod? If I can change that myself, what file(s) do I need to edit?
I already use the mod that got rid of most allied air and ship traffic - which made a HUGE improvement near Pearl Harbor and Midway.
Thanks!!!

Also don't forget that they tried to make a good simulation; real subs didn't encounter a lot of shipping most of the time. That was one of the complaints about SH1 - too many contacts.

That info is in the Contacts.CFG file. I kept adjusting the settings till I got
one that i thought was realistic. No need to know about stuff clear across the
Pacific....
