Hi,
I`m playing SH3 with GWX 1.03 (fantastic job btw.).
Reading through the forum I`ve learned that the round convoy symbol indicates a convoy which has been under attack before. No I`ve found one of these and to my amazement three of the four escorts (3x Black Swan and one Flower class) are burning at full extension. They are still doing search patterns though. So is this eye-candy only or are burning ships in attacked convoys really damaged? Does it influence sensors or weaponary? Are they going to sink finally?
Next one: I damaged a large tanker with one torpedo, which lost speed (crawling along at 0-1 knots). After shaking off the escorts, I chased it submerged as one escort still was nearby. In the hydrophone I heard sinking-noises from the tanker, but it still was moving after around 2 hours so I finally gave her the coupe de grace using another torpedo. So is the squeeking and roaring indicating a sinking ship or does this happen to heavily damaged but not sinking ships too?
TIA
Z.

GWX has simulated AI Wolfpacks. The burning/damaged escorts are still searching/engaging the AI Subs. If they have sustained enough damage, they will sink. Due to the limitation of SH3's code I would imagine that sensors will remain unaffected. As for weaponary, sure, this can be affected. It's good fun to destroy an escorts gun placements from distance, this will leave them toothless while you're on the surface.
The sound affects you heard from the Tanker were due to flooding compartments, bulkheads under strain and hull creaks. You will be able to tell the difference in sound when a ship is sinking.;)

Welcome to Subsim Zak! :arrgh!:
1. Yeah the Simulated AI wolfpacks in GWX do damage ships but if they are in your view area they wont fire torpedoes and may even surface to engage the DDs with Deck guns, as futile as it is but hey more time for you
2.Thats defintly the flooding sound, Coulden explain it better then Dan.

THX for the warm welcome mates.
Actually I`m an SH3 old-hand, owned it since day one and have read subsim from the start but seldom posted anything. Great and very informative board.
I haven`t bothered with SH3 for the last year or so, but discovered GWX a few months back. Since than I`m hooked again. I lost my career due to a system crash (only then noticed that SH3 saves are on C: partition, is there a way to change it?) so had to begin again. Started with U-53 at St.-Nazaire in Oct. `40 and am on Patrol 2 right now. In patrol 1 I found for the first time ever something bigger than an escort, Dido-class HMS Argonaut and sank her. First patrol ended with 51,000 tons (87 % difficulty).
Now I`m S-W of Ireland, I broke away from before-mentioned convoy as the weather was horrible after sinking 2 medium merchants. Some ships did sink, I don`t know if they were torpedoed or the bad weather was destroying them. Earlier I got one whaler and the already mentioned tanker, so my current patrol is around 36,000 tons with 6 eels left (I had some bad luck with duds unfortunatly).
Big fun here!

Welcome to this nest of ruffians and happy hunting :D

SH3 puts the saves in your "my documents", you can move that, I've put it on my H: partition for example, works fine :D
another benefit of wolfpack assistance apart from damaging escorts, which also makes them easier to spot at night or in fog, is the fact that trailing AI uboats sometimes draw off 1 or 2 escorts, you get those reported with the convoy sometimes but trailing by about 20km or so, I once found a convoy like that that only had an auxiliary cruiser to protect it after being wolfpacked, so I took that out first and then had a jolly old time using up all my Deckgun and Flak ammo, only left the Neutrals and 1 silly passenger/cargo afloat, happy times:D

What happens is the escort detects a sub and will hunt it and try to destroy it for as long as the escort has the contact. Once that contact is lost (after a pre-determined period of time) the escort will return to the convoy.
If within the pre-determined time contact is re-established, the time period commences again from the beginning. :arrgh!:
