Here goes...

if you attack and sink a neutral unit, all of the other neutral units treat you as an enemy for the next 24 (?) hours in SH3.

does the same logic hold true for a British destroyer that sinks an american merchant in early 1941?

for example, your sub surfaces on the port side of an American Merchant... the British Destroyer on the starboard side goes nuts shooting at you and kills the merchant in the process... do all of the American ships turn on the british ship?

:rotfl:

:hmm:

That would make things easy for 24 hours while you attack a convoy the escorts are shooting the hell out of each other. :rotfl:

Just tried it... American BB in the center of a convoy when USA was neutral. surfaced behind an american merchant and the British escorts opened fire and sank the merchant on accident...

Well that Nevada class battle ship was having NONE of that business...

Oblitterated the escorts!!!! :rotfl:

Sounds like you found the chink in the escorts; we must exploit this weakness to the utmost. :yep:

Sounds great, now all I have to do is find a convoy with a neutral US BB in it! :D

Hmm, I have a similar question then: (this may have been already asked, didn't find it in the older threads though)

Ok, so I attack a neutral ship, thus making the other ships from that country go hostile on me.
Sinking neutral ships gives you a penalty to your renown, right?
Do the ships that have just turned hostile give you renown just like enemy ships?

Funny to read about the games AI tieing knots on itself

:rotfl:That's quite an exploit, won't happen often but so worth it, you could even try the same thing with Liberty Cargos, those also severely outgun a DD and could play merry hell by suddenly going postal on an unsuspecting convoy

:hmm: however,
I don't think any Battleship in a hostile convoy escorted by British Warships would technically be neutral, American or not...

Any U-boat captain would have at least shot 1 eel at it in a situation like that, Sink the big tub and let the lawyers sort out the legality of it, one less battleship is always good, shame it wasn't an Essex class carrier though :D

I'll keep saying it BBs do not belong in the middle of convoys going less than 10 knots, that's just asking to get sunk, so that's what I'll do if given half a chance:arrgh!:

edit: Stierlitz, nope, sorry, It's not about whoever fired first taking the blame, unfortunately, that way you could deckgun an american fishing boat for only a minor penalty and the sink a few American passenger liners or maybe a Taskforce and not only get away with it but get a huge reward. I don't think the Fuhrer would appreciate you dragging the US into the war in say early 1940, it'd probably mean a nice show trial and a firing squad instead of medals and drinks on the house....

I like them there. U-99 just bumped into an inbound convoy on July 30th, 1940, northwest of Ireland. Visibility was bad (heavy rain, heavy fog), and after I shot all my torpedoes at 2 tankers in front of me and 1 medium freighter behind me (the first good targets I could see), the next ship I saw was the Rodney. :damn:

After some depth charge evasion, running around the convoy on the surface reloading tubes, only to find out it changed course, catching up with it again, I made another submerged approach, and found the Rodney steaming nicely straight ahead in the exact same position in the convoy. How considerate of her. ;)

15 minutes later she joined her sistership Nelson (U-99's big score during operation Hartmut) on the bottom of the Atlantic with 4 torpedo holes in her port side.

Damnit Jimbuna.

Edit: Thats classified by BDU hahaha... i'd be willing to bet its a hard coded issue anyhow.

Thanks for the answer, but it doesn't satisfy me at all.
Let the Fuhrer be the Fuhrer, and let his firing squads go "bang bang".

I wanted to know how this is handled technically.

Maybe I should give you a better example:

On the 12.12.1939 (or whatever, before the USA joined in), 06:00 hrs, I attack a lone american merchant (neutral). I get the penalty for sinking a neutral unit and all american ships turn hostile on me for 24 hrs (thus becoming my ENEMIES).
Let's say that 5 hours later another american merchant crosses my path. This time yet, the unit is my ENEMY.

Does sinking THIS unit give me renown just like sinking an enemy unit usually does?

No, unfortunately. the merchant will still count as neutral, they only see you as hostile, that does not mean you should consider them enemy ships, even though they may attack you if capable of doing so, the game engine counts them as neutrals anyway, so no renown for sinking them :dead:

Damn. Thought I'd "accidentally" wreck an american fishing boat and then act in self defence... :arrgh!:

Interesting what sort of unintended stuff happens in GWX. The variety is almost like real life :D
