Granted that the types are more representative of design evolution, but still, im pretty sure we all have our favorites.

Personally, theres one thing i love about ALL of them. No externally stored torpedos! I do not miss that at all! :rotfl:

Until I get the priveledge to sail a Balao class boat, the Gato class are the ones for me.

The USS Drum and her crew are a top notch group, and [fictionally] im proud to serve with them.

There's something about the one Salmon-class that was able to sink two battleships in one night that just makes it special. That and the incredible escape I was able to pull off in horrible wheather, flanking it on the surface with severe electric engine damage. Go-go no japanese radar!

The more primitive the better. In SH3 I love the Type IIs. I would love to sail on an original Holland boat. CSS Hunley I'm not so sure about; 100% loss rate is not so appealing. Turtle might be fun.

Balao , twould be cool to get one modded with the fairwaters like

I'll take a US fleet boat over a Type 9 uboat any day of the week.

What is it we all loved about type 9's, eh? more range, more surface speed, more torpedo's (tubes),

A fleet boat has all of that, and NO external stores! Plus radar that works.

While i detest US submarine and German submarine comparisions (because the US didnt make a type 7 equivlant, only a type 9 equivilant), ill happily compare gato's and balao's to type 9's any day of the week :88)

I'll tell you what, I just completed my 3rd patrol in the S class. I did all my assigned areas. Sunk the tonnage. Radioed in TF. You know, one man wrecking ball. Gotta say, for asiatic fleet ops, its either the Salmon or S-boats.. As for COMSUBPAC operating out of Pearl Harbor, it's split between the Balau (USS-Blackfin at the moment:up: ) and the Porpoise (in another life time, lurking in the deep waters is the USS Shark)

Balaus are excellent as they're big enough to be stable on the surface, and yet submerged, they're still quick enough and are able to dive deep enough, as for Porpoises, they're a training boat.. cant beat that:up:

With Regards,

Krauter

I've sailed the Porpoise class until the Capt. decided to go for a TF in the Shallows. After that I've started a new career with the S class and boy is this fun. Just need to remember I don't have AA and all's well.

Forgot I didn't have AA just once, never finished the patrol I was sent to (cause of damage) but she got us home... just to get a letter saying "nice job of getting the crew home but never ever do that again"
She even gave me a carrier, put 4 torp's in her and the last torpedo hit the stern which literally blew all the props off of her (nice big hole at the stern), had plenty of time reloading after the destroyers gave up on me to put her to rest.

I miss the 'six tubers' but I can wait it out until then.

I have a lot of trouble answering this question. For performance, sure, a Balao-class, but most of my best SH IV moments are associated with particular boats, not the class itself.

Like when I tore into a convoy of light passenger carriers south of the Phillipines in the Sargo...or turned a photo recon into a raid on Osaka with the Grampus...or marvelled at how cool an Ise-class battleship looks doing a sharp turn through the periscope of the S-31.

Etc.

That said, gonna vote for the Salmon/Sargos. Something about them I like.

Salmon/Sargo's for me aswell. They strike a rather nice balance between the two extremes of the S-Class and Balao.

Not to mention I've commanded the Sailfish in 4 seperate careers, and shes hasn't let me down once.

Balao for me. There will always be a place for the sugar boats too. I have command of the USS Balao as of now and it's 1944. Gato comes in second though, as I've sunk a lot of tonnage with the USS Drum:sunny: . Kind of sad 1945 is approaching and I know the war is gonna end along with my great carrer I've had . I have only found the Yam Toe Yamato once, but only was able to send 4 torps before I got chased down by the tin cans. That is one of my goals before my career is over. I've always had a weakness for the underdog. I was a Type II hugger in SH3 and naturally I lean towards the S-Boat a lot in Wolves of the Pacific.

The only thing I don't like about the S-Boat is the lack of a TDC (yeah, I know it has one in the game, but I like playing historically) so I switch to Porpoise every now and then when I'm tired of filling my map with doodles :D
