Hi
I find myself with the following situation:
1) start a new carreer
2) After a while, in mid ocean, surfaced, nothing in sight, I save the game
3) shut down SH4
4) start SH4 again (say, the next day)
5) Load game
6) Crash to desktop
No idea what the issue is. Any advice on where I should look?

Sounds like a good ole corrupted save.
Do you have a previous one to fall back to ?

Even the autosaves when leaving port will cause a crash. That's what puzzling me. Seems that any save file automatically gets corrupted.

Not following you.
You mean any NEW save or any save at all ? Dont you have any saves prior other than in base saves ?
I keep at least 4 seperate save games on top of the in base saves and rotate through them (overwighting the oldest).

Ive got this problem to. i might have to go back 6 or seven saves to get back into the game which is just a pain.
Its saves all ok and theres no error. but when i load it up. Bang!! straight back to desktop.
I dont wanna go back an hours play just to do it all over again with the risk of it happening again!

Strange. I've got a save game which crashes sometimes. Then again, I wasn't far in the career when it happened. Everytime I load the game it works. But if I try and leave the career or go to the main menu it crashes out to the desktop. :hmm:
I wish they would properly finish this product. It still has an unpolish feel about it. Hope they do a v1.4 patch. Things still annoy me even now. It is alot better though with the v1.3 patch, just.. why produce a game with exclusive material, tin boxes, official soundtracks, badges, maps when they do a half-baked version.
I'm ranting... sorry folks!

Are using any mods? Maybe the mods are not fully 1.3 compatible OR the mod states it's compatible but its creator doesn't know the full impact on the game.

have you installed them while at sea??
YOU CAN ONLY INSTALL MOD'S WHILE AT BASE.
DO NOT TAKE ANY MOD'S OUT IN GAME...
If you've install Mod's at sea uninstall all mod's and reinstall them, then start a new career.
Otherwise and this is going to be a long testing period for you... But this way you'll now if it's a Mod issue or your game that's messed up.
1_ Unable every Mod and start a new career.
2_ Save the game just after you've set sail to .... where ever.
3_ Load save (if it works OK it's not the stock game).
4_ Install 1 Mod at a time and restart a career.
5_ Save the game just after you've set sail to .... where ever.
6_ Load the save and see if it works OK
Do step 4 to 6 with every Mod you want in the game, this way you'll find out what Mod is causing the CTD. (if any)
Then you can either re-download the Mod (might have bin a corrupt DL) or leave it out all together.

The only mod I have installed is the 'Taihosan Maru CTD Fix' as without it the forementioned ship can sometimes crash the game to the desktop if it is hit a certain way. I've had it crash on me this way a couple of times.
Says it all when you have to put a fix on to correct an existing problem still in SH4. Then again, it still can crash when returning to the menus.
My brother has given up on this game. Silent Hunter III is a better game. I just love the graphics for Silent Hunter IV and the fact you are in the pacific and not sinking English ships.

I have no mods what so ever! its just another one of thoose bugs that was obviously there from the start but just never got stomped out before release and now there having trouble getting rid of it
I had a corrupted saved career once, I got an message it could not be loaded but there was no CTD. Well that's the way things are.
