I don't raid ports. In real life there was only one harbor raid by a u-boat, and it was planned by Admiral Donitz himself.

then i spotted some ships AND COASTAL ARTY :damn:

i cleared the base and got the DD's patrolling on THE OTHER side on my ass

The most dangerous port I've raided is Cadiz.
You gotta watch the babes there.
And at El Truco, they water the drinks.
The Captain of the Thelia will try to steal your wallet and short you on torpedoes. Also be careful of the girls in Las Brujas. :D

First port I went into since I loaded GWX was Norfolk USA. My last patrol in Jan 42 was to the grid where Norfolk is. I decided to go in at night. Sunk 3 large ships and 2 destroyers, but got pounded. Had only 2 meters below the keel at PD. I ended up losing both scopes. Limped out and had to surface due to lack of Oxygen........

I have always avoided harbour raids due to the excessive pita getting in and out. However, this morning I performed a 'drive-by' harbour raid on Calais. I wasn't intending any thing of the sort at the time, but when I made a 40 degree turn to starbord to avoid an armed trawler in the dark I started receiving 'ship sighted' calls from the watch. It took a short while before I realised the ships were actualy docked in port. From just under 6000 Yds out, one medium tanker, one J&K escort and a medium merchant. A 90 degree turn back onto my course for Willhelmshaven with no reaction from the port. Stupidly I completely failed to take advantage of the situation by finishing off the rest with the deck gun. This is november '39.

Steed you know thats why the Brittish liked those boats.
That, and they were easier to find.

Scapa Flow- troop transport, misc merchants not as interesting as you would think
Lerwick sub base, at night with 15 mph wind, easy
Gibralter- CTD
Port Said- rusting on the bottom
Valetta- there are some large ships in harbor
Norfolk- there's two large tankers, some parked DDs, and some merchants
New York- there's lots of tonnage, night with 15 mph winds
Curcao- lots of tankers, early war weak defense, used my deck gun
Port of Spain- lots of tankers, early war weak defense

How in the world did you get into Lerwick!!

Pesonally, I was able to totally luck into that one...

I happened upon a situation where (1939-40 mind you) I was able to sail right in under a cover of thick fog. Was able to sink a sub at the docks!

For me, the best (easiest) harbor hunting was in the Black Sea... they have some nice deep water ports. But it gets boring after the 2nd or 3rd run. I don't usually go wandering into harbors (or shallows in general). In GWX, a mid-war DD that has a bead on you in 50m of water or less is almost assured destruction.

Scapa Flow is hard to get into but once ur in its a peice of cake, sorta like Harvard U.

Um Norfolk is a pain to get in undetected, Its very shallow even before u enter the port, and once the US enters the war they have a few PT boats patrolling.

Port of Spain and Curcoa r easy early on, but when i went there were mainly America tankers there.

Loch Ewe and the other British ports all have subnets and mines so be careful when u enter them.
In the MED, Alexandria isfairly Easy to attack.

I just got back from Raiding the small island in the South Atlantic with the Port Helena, It was very easy to attack, but they have mines and subnets on the port's Flanks

Yeah, I've seen their harbor - undefended, but not too many targets.

i think the same. harbour is a submarine trap with nets, mines ,and shallow waters.
you can be trapped or run aground and be captured by allied forces. :dead:

gunter prien was fortunate to survive and return to base.

It's nice to go in to NY harbor before hostilities commence. You can do some sightseeing and destroy incoming British tonnage.....

After the declaration of war it is a whole different story though.....

Normally spoken, no harbour peeking for me, cost me a few careers too many (DID)

I attacked around new years eve 1941/42, so the defenses was still weak. Still, loads of tonnage.
