Hi there Chaps and Chapesses, Am having a lot of trouble, having upgraded to VISTA HOME PREMIUM, probably my own misunderstanding. However I do not seem to be able to get JSGME to load into SH4 completely. I get everything BUT the MOD folder. I have had to reduce resolution to 1280x720, normal working 1280x1024pixels, to stop SH4 crashing out. Best to give you wonderful Technocrats a run down of the system as it stands today, in the hope that someone will put me right............
Vista Home Premium on an HP Media Center m7630 uk
System Type X86-based PC
Processor Intel Core Duo 64000@1.3GHz 800Mhz
Video Card X1950 Pro ATI Tech
RealTek HD Audio
Memory 3.5GB
SM BIOS version 2.4 system directory C:\system 32
BIOS version Phoenix Tech 3.08, 18/09/2006

There is plenty of FREE SPACE in both Memory and HD. I do believe I have installed all MS Updates and updated all Drivers, cleaned HD, Defragged, etc though somehow I have lost the icon for the Recycle Bin on the desktop !!!!
Your genuine assistance would be so very very much appreciated.........Dusty

You really should read the JSGME help file, it's there to, umm, help you. ;)

Extract:
- MICROSOFT VISTA USERS: If you are running the Generic Mod Enabler on Vista and are having problems with mods "taking" (the usual symptom is that the MODS folder itself is not created when the Generic Mod Enabler is first run), then simply right-click JSGME.exe in Windows Explorer and select "Run as Administrator". Alternatively, right-click JSGME.exe and select "Properties". In the properties window select the "Compatibility" tab and check "Run this program in compatibility mode" and in the box below select "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)". In some instances you may need to apply both solutions.

If you're new to Vista, then I also recommend you read up on Vista's "User Account Control" and "File Virtualization" features to get a better idea of what's going on under the Vista hood in regards to system security. ;)

Btw, the easiest way I've found to bypass this "file virtualization" is to simply install SH4 in some other directory outside "Program Files". I used "C:\Silent Hunter 4", for example. Or use "C:\Games\SH4". Anything, as long as it's not in "Program Files".

That bypasses this "file virtualization" that MS has tossed into Vista. Not to join the MS bashing bandwagon, but this "feature" appears to be an afterthought... and really isn't worthwhile, especially if it can be bypassed so easily.

:yep: That's what I've been recommending in the SH3 forum... http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=609815&postcount=6

May I please thank all of you for your help. One additional thing, if I may not encroach upon your generosity..........Having had your inputs I would now like to re-install Vista and start fresh (especially with your added know how).....Can I just put the disc in again or do I have to go back to XP and go from there. I have the Recovery Discs made to do the latter.......many many thanks again .....Dusty

Your best bet is to boot directly off the CD to install vista. Pop the disc in your drive and reboot. You may get a "Press any key to boot from CD" prompt while your computer is booting, or you may have to go into the BIOS Setup and set the CD drive to boot before the hard drive.

Doing this will let you format your entire hard-drive before starting the installation Select Custom Install, then select Advanced Options when it asks where you want to install to and you will get the option to format the drive. IMPORTANT NOTE: Formatting your hard drive will cause you to lose all data on it so make sure you have copies of everthing you want to save first.

Perhaps I'm lucky, I'm using the same version of Vista as you, which has all the updates on it and so far JSGME has worked as it did in XP.
