View Full Version : GWX is CTD and I don't know why

I have just installed GWX. I also added SH3Cmdr and SH3Gen. I've also updated GWX with the latest patch. Now, I just started a new career. I started up SH3Cmdr and made a new profile and then clicked to launch the game through SH3Cmdr. After recruiting some more crew members I was off on my first patrol. The farthest I was able to get through it was out of my own harbor and then CTD with no specific message as to why.

I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

SH3 Gen must be problem. I use Commander and I have no problems with it, but I don't use Gen.

What are your system specs?

What are your game video settings?

Are your drivers updated?

When SH3 dumps you back to desktop you will get a pop up error message
That message says sh3 has caused a problem etc
There is a link to click for more information

Click that link and the reason is given
SH3.exe
Kernel.dll
Sim.act etc

That always helps narrow down a ctd

Thanks guys. Actually I was not running SH3Gen when it crashed. I was only running the game through SH3Cmdr. I will try again and see if it crashes and then I will look for the reason and post it here.

My system specs are:
CPU: Pentium 4 - 2800 GHz
RAM: 1 GB
Video card: NVidia GeForce FX5200 (128 MB)
OS: Windows XP

My video drivers are not updated so I'll try that. As for game video settings, do you mean the ones you change within the game itself?

One other thing. I've read that you shouldn't upgrade your sub in any way until after your first patrol because there's some bug. Well I didn't get any upgrades but did get some additional crew. Is that considered an upgrade and could that have cause the CTD?

Did you install the GWX config files required for SH3Cmdr? Not doing so will, under certain circumstances, cause CTDs.

Consult page 21 of the GWX manual for more information.

Yes, I have installed the additional files in order for SH3Cmdr to be compatible with GWX 1.03.

I have a little update. I tried starting a new career again. This time though I went into the options menu within the game and turned off the High Textures and also I did not recruit any additional crew, just went straight to the patrol. I also downloaded the latest drivers for my video card. So far, everything is looking good. I have not experienced a CTD yet.

I do have a question regarding SH3Gen. Does this program only provide additional historical info while playing the game and nothing else? Is it true that it can be turned on only when you're atleast 200 kms from your home port otherwise it will crash or something?

Another thing regarding GWX, which I couldn't find in the manual. Is it safe to save your game durring a patrol? I'm not fighting any ships yet, just sailing, so is it safe to save it?

When I quit the game, SH3Cmdr asks me if I want to rollback. Should it be kept not rolled back if I'm not adding any additional mods? Does the saved game become affected by either rolling back or not?

Yes you can save in GWX
As with stock SH3 try NOT to save submerged\Within 50km of a port or too close to enemy units
If saving after a sinking ALWAYS wait till you have the SGD message

SH3commander asks you to rollback incase you intend to apply any changes\mods
I find its a good habit just to click yes
Only takes a couple of seconds

Good news on the CTDs

Did you install any new mods? I had this same problem a couple of days ago, after I installed a new mod. Turned out the new mod replaced menu_1024_768.ini, causing it to be incompatible with some other mod, causing the game to crash exactly at the "not so long ago" screen every time I tried to start a patrol.

Nope, didn't touch anything, turns out it just didn't like the save game I was using.Did it on the surface with nothing around and miles from anything so should have been fine, but it didn't like it so had to start that particular patrol again,oh well at least its working:yep:;)
