View Full Version : Of all the luck

After a good start on my first patrol, encountering heavier and heavier vessels I find myself going out on my third mission (all in the same patrol) refitted at Midway got back to Honshu ... or something..

Arriving there I'm out of luck, no vessels worth mentioning so I decided to go to the outer end of the island to the SW cutting across the many islands to see if there's any thing on the other side.
I couldn’t believe my luck I find myself right smack in the middle of a taskforce going 16k with 2 heavy cruisers (cant remember the class) 1 large troop transport and 1 light cruisers with a S*** load of destroyers as escorts accompanying them. And what’s best about it is that I’m at a perfect angle for an attack.:smug:

I line up for the troop transport but my crew wants a shot at the heavy cruisers (I know, it’s a Chinese parliament on my ship) so I though I’d give the crew something to cheer about, after all we’ve bin a t see a long time and this is no time for a mutiny.
I line up for a long shot (2000yds or so) so to be able to get a second salvo in at the troop transport). The idea was to cripple both of them to take ‘um out afterwards.:know:
Well at that time my luck kinda ran out, they spotted me, and 5 of the.. hell I don’t know how many I seen…destroyers came after me and pounded me for the rest of the afternoon.:shifty:
I had no luck in finding the rest of the taskforce again and with only 8 torp’s left ( 4 bow and 4 stern) I decided to go back to the main event (that being the boring mission).
But first things first.. "My prices" had to meet the bottum of the ocean. Well in any case the cruiser did.

Bad luck keeps after me.

On the way back I encounter 1 CAP going out which was to far off to be bothered about so I stayed topside.. The disappointment of some of my crew came to light as the Jack*** of an SD radar operator forgot to mention there was a second CAP coming in from the other side which evidently found me and blasted the crap out of me with their bombs.:nope:
By the time I get to cover in the deep blue I get hit by some 50cal machine gun which destroyed both my attack periscope and observer periscope together with some other damage (bulkheads, batteries, diesel engine, radio.. :hmm: list keeps going but I’ll stop here) I crawl out of there waiting for nightfall to do some much needed repairs.

Bold as I am I decided to head to the nearest Jap port to see if I can find a nice oil tanker sitting and waiting for me to drop by.
Now having both my periscopes destroyed I had to do a night insertion, surface and take aim with my bino’s . I get in my last 4 fish and down she goes.
At this time I hoped that that would be enough to finish the mission thus ending the partol in order to go home for some R & R and a new boat (this one being totalled by the assault mentioned earlier).

Guess what… I get a NoNo on the missions end.:damn:

“Man the deck gun, fire at will, aim for the water line…:-?
I take out 2 small freighters and finally I’m allowed to go home.

Now to top things off…

On my way home I get a message sounding like this:
:o “Enemy task force, (longitude and latitude), heading SSW, speed fast.

And you know what…
It’s on my path, just has to stop and wait for “it” to go by (just within radar range). Instead I had to speed up in order not to be detected by the task force escort. Being out of pretty much everything.:shifty:

Not even 4 hours later I get this message:
 “Enemy small convoy, (longitude and latitude), heading SW, speed medium.

And you know what…
It’s on my path again, just has to do the same thing as before and wait for “it” to go by. Instead I speeded up again order not to be detected by the convoy (worked the first time) but in this case the escort did find me…And well, they sank me.

I swear this is not a story other that a true story, it happened.

Final note:
Going to uninstall the game and never reinstall it again.
The disappointment of me and my new crew would simply kill me.

its unfortunate that you are going to unload the game.

Each convoy or ship you approach you must be secret and silent especially when DD's are involved.

As for the messages recieved, you as captain have to make a choice if you can or get the opportunity to grab some tonnage safely and aggresively; so you can bring your crew back to thier families.

Im always coming up on capitol ship and especially freighter convoys. I creep in at 1-2 knots rigged for silent running. taking my time and easing my way in to let loose a few fish to sink some tonnage. Get in thier, launch your sortie of fish and dip deep below the thermal layer and creep out alive to fight another day. Miss a ship or two? That's okay, go back out there for more.

Dont give up so easily, give it a another try.

Submarines are a "Silent Service."

Ahoooooga!

Well, it is a subsim. Read any WW2 patrol logs? Disappointment is a very common thing for crews of these boats to feel. But, it adds to the thrill and sense of accomplishment when you do bag some juicy ships and manage to slip away to tell the tale.

It's also a game though, so a good idea is to save it periodically. That way if an engagement doesn't work out, you can reload to just before and try again. Once armed with foresight, you can make a much better approach and really sick it to 'em.

Three cheers for 300k tonne patrols!

Fine then take your ball and go home...

Have a nice life

ps; Alot of the 'contact reports' are just color text and the ones that arent can be a real hit or miss on intercepting them. The 'reports' are not always 100% accurate.

Do you mean save the game?
I'm no sinner so I don't save the game :smug: (no offence Nattydread);)

I don't use the map with the shipping lanes on it.. hell, I didn't even look in the box to see if there's one in it.I just installed the game and went on from there.
Note: I don’t want to know if there’s one in it.

In SH 3 I used it but that kinda spoiled the game for me… went out, finished my assignment and went to THE LANES to get me some tonnage.

Basically I do the same now but this time it’s ten times harder. It’s by choice I know.
Thats why it made it so hard for me after 5month at sea, to find myself crossing the path of the 2 convoy's.
I never thought I'd come across them at 1/3s of f the voyage home. That being, coming from Honshu, going back to Pearl, about 1 grid to the left past the last Japanese occupied island with the airbase.

Any way’s….

;) <----- I couldn’t add this smile to the thread because I ran out of smiles to add. (Only allowed 12 in a post).:-?
So I think some of you might have misinterpreted that last part.. I’m not about to throw my towel in the errrrrrm…..sea.

That might be but as I had my SD radar operative in the brig (That be the machine gun position as they forgot to add a brig to the sim) I checked the radar myself and both times they where hits… just on the outer edge of the radar set to 20000.
For some of you who might wonder what happened to my SD radar operative..
He got court-martialled and is now spending the rest of his pitiful life scrubbing subs with a toothbrush.:arrgh!:

As for me,
I’ve set sail with my new sub and am out there some where’s and have forsaken democracies I’m on a full hammer and sizzle regime now. :yep:
