I'm new, and am wondering what advice you'd give: should I stay with stock SHIII while I figure it out and then figure out GWX, or just go straight to GWX and save the trouble of figuring stock SHIII out? I'm gathering that GWX escorts are ace, just from the "Das Boot plays SH4" spoofs.

(Let's just assume for the moment that I could be talking about any super mod, not just GWX.)

Its completely up to you, but I personally would say go with GWX. If you go with stock first you might get caught out when you try and take on escorts in GWX.

GWX ruuuullleeeessss...AAALLLAAARM!!!!

(ohhhhh...I'm a "chief", never liked been a frogman anyway lol)

Play stock for a month to get a feel of the game then move on up to GWX 1.03

As Steed rightly says
Give stock a bash for a month or so to get used to the game
You will appreciate the GWX changes more that way also

Yup. play stock for a month, consider it training. It's the same game but GWX allows you fewer mistakes, plus it is a lot more intense and realistic :D

Yes stock for a month is a good idea.
Then try one of the supermods.

Did you just buy SH3? If so, stick with it for about, oh, a month and then move on to GWX. By the way, I hope you have a 56K connection or faster.

Lol yeah, otherwise you might be there downloading all the files for about a week! If you do have a slow speed connection PM me and I'll see about posting the files on a disk to you.

Definately play stock for a little while first and ease yourself into it. That way when you install GWX you will really notice the difference and admire just what a great job GWX does of improving on what was a good subsim and turning it into a great one. That's my two pence.

Thanks for the tips and offers for help. I have a fast connection, so I'm OK with massive downloads.

Looks like I'll muck around with stock SHIII (just got it last week), for about a month, to get my feet wet. One month for you guys might translate to two or three for me...I can't afford to make my family SHIII widow/orphans.

I'm starting at the bottom: a campaign in 1939 in a IIA. I'll probably end at the bottom, too. :D

I'm also doing a Gibraltar single mission to learn some things about avoiding escorts, and other basics other than shooting.

Personally, I'd go straight to GWX. This is what I did, and I found that I was learning tactics from scratch instead of learning stock tactics and then finding that they don't work in GWX.

Also, I started playing (once I'd gotten past the training missions of course) with realistic torpedo solutions. It's frustrating until you get the hang of it, but you learn much quicker and it's ultimately more satisfying when you DO sink things.
