Hello,
hell yeah, U-53, Type VIIB spots Large Convoy, unescourted:rock:
Grid: BF17
0835 Spring 1940
Course: 065 Speed: 7kts

This was almost a dream. I kept waiting for the sonar guy to announce a Kreigschiff but that call never came. Also, I was keeping an eye out for air cover, since BF17 is close to Ireland, but there was none, and after checking the map for allied air cover, there was none to be expected in 1940.
The convoy consisted of an Ore Carrier, 5 Large Cargo ships, a Large Merchant, a Large Tanker, 2 Medium Cargo ships, a Small Tanker and numerous small merchants and Tramps. The first attack was against the ore carrier and the large tanker, then I did battle surface and attacked all of the heavies. The only smaller merchants I got were carrying tanks and deuce and a half trucks.
The only bad mark of the attack was that, in the mayhem, I didnt check the flags of all the vessels and accidentially sank an american flag small tanker. Their bad, since the US knew a war existed between England and her allies and Germany and her allies. They shouldnt have been there in the first place, had they know better.

Drinks on me!

This has to be unrealistic. I'm sure a large convoy would have been escourted, but I'll take it. My previous patrols had ended in some frustration.
anyone else come across an unescourted convoy? could this be a fluke? I'm still in a state of bewilderment as to why this happened.

Sounds like the early unescorted convoys of tankers down south of the states. I love hitting those...6-8 tankers...a couple of large cargo's....and not a gun between them all.

Some ppl have all the luck... I'm currently persuing a convoy on 1940 with a speed of 10 knots and it has 4 escorts :(

I have NEVER come across an unescorted convoy. Always had a minimum of two escorts. Would say your a very lucky kaleun! Is it possible that the DD's were off chasing another sub?? I've seen other u-boats around sometimes they pull the escorts away from the convoy.

In may 1940, returning to Wilhelmshaven, I found once south of Ireland (BF11-BF12-BF13) a large convoy escorted only by an auxiliary cruiser. Once I sunk the cruiser, I spread terror 12 hours among the merchants, sinking 10 of them, more or less two thirds of the convoy, and many of them with the deck gun. I think also it was very strange to find such a weak escort so near from the english coast. Not a single destroyer or aeroplane came to stop the carnage. 87.000 tons went to the bottom. For a moment it became a bit boring that turkey shoot.

Good shootin` Avatar.
I think to remember one unescorted inbound convoy, stock SH3 with some minor mods. 1/2-1/2 US/British. Spent the torps and took to the deck gun. Tis then I learned gun happycrew didn't care if the next target was neutral or not. had to put the kabosh on that deal. Got blasted by Hurricaines.

OH for the love of mary:damn: now see what you've done, you've given him ideas again!as if GWX1.04 isn't going to hard enough!its going to get to the point when the only time you see a convoy it will have half the royal navy escorting it,we are going to have to work out a code if people find these juicy bits so that the eagle eyed GWX crew don't spoil the fun;)

My only unescorted convoy was after I sank the bleeding escorts. I'll have one of those drinks, Avatar. Well done! :D

There were unescorted convoys in RL as the Brits suffered a lack of escorts till April 40 when the Flowers and Hunts appeared so any that are in will stay in
And they are rare

Kudos for the attack

the best convoy I've had only had one escort, after sinking him, then I had fun. 60,000 tons sunk and all ammo expended!:arrgh!:

I thought that if they were in a convoy they could be attacked at will?

Just wondering again why Doenitz denied attacking escorts. Wouldn't that be an option to sink DDs and than such a lonely convoy been quicky attacked from the air or einzats gruppen + another wolfs which come to the area? That would be a slaughter!!

Didn't that happen to the ill-fated convoy PQ-17? Or something like that :-?

I encountered one unarmed convoy off the southernwest tip of Ireland, but this was early vanilla SH3 if I remember correctly. A turkey-shoot indeed :rotfl:

Quite different from my recent encounter near Gibraltar, U-505 IXC - nov. 1941. Perfect ocean! Perfect weather! Unfortunately, also in bright daylight! Fired four eels and they all missed LOL! Crashdive to 165 meters, depthcharged, but sneaked away.

It's hard to let a prey like that go, but I have to. Life to fight another day. That's more of a VII job. Only one escort chased me, but he had four buddies among the six rows of ships. I should cruise until the 7th of december and cross a certain pond :D

The convoy was being tracked though. I noticed a circle icon for the convoy and several ships were on fire. The DD's destroyed my fellow U-boat before I arrived at the scene.

BBW, could you arrange for 16 Black Swan escorts for the convoy in question please?

I also think maybe the convoy could also use some aircover. Seven or eight TseTse Mossies should do the trick nicely. :arrgh!:

LMAO! HOOOyaaahh.:rotfl:

In this moment I think I´ve found an unescorted convoy west of Rockall Banks.

The time is april, 9th 1942.

To be continued.
