Wow, what a film! The ending sucks, after all they've been through to get knocked off like that stinks lol. But I should have known it wouldn't be a "they all lived happily ever after" ending :dead:. Have a sudden urge to go play SHIII now lol, off to the atlantic with me!

I got the movie yesterday finally and watched the first DVD, Director's version, but then the family said they had enough of it for one day (I somehow persuaded to watch it with me). So we'll see tonight what happens at Gibraltar. ^^

without a doubt. its the greatest submarine film of all time.the bravery of the people in those submarines. and the conditions they had to go through.makes you think. could we in present times go through what they did.?.

...Director's version...
You know there's an even longer version? The Original, Uncut Version; 4 hours 53 minutes. Much better.
I haven't seen it since it first came out in the US (1981), it got a good review in the paper, so I dragged a friend to see it, subtitles and all. I just got SHIII recently, so I've ordered it and Iron Coffins to complete my indoctrination into sub service.

It is indeed remarkable what they were able to go through, but I think that if the situation called for it some would be able to go through it again in this day and age. I doubt everyone back in those days were able to do it also. It's like have you ever thought if another Alexander the Great could of been or could be? There are probably some people today in our world who could be that if the situational variables were there. Just like Alexander himself could of just been some peasant farmer if he weren't born in Greece (Macedonia), or if that part of the world was conquered by the Persians.
The only issue I have with Das Boot is the behaviour of the crew under attack- I highly doubt that an experienced crew with be shrieking and screaming as much as they do in this film....
I read somewhere that that was the one thing that annoyed the old U-Bootfahren as well.
Oh, well. Dramatic license.

Aye I know, but I couldn't get it, no way to buy it in Hungary as far as I know. So it looks like someday I'll order it from abroad.
It's an epic film, too bad the family fell asleep while watching the second dvd with me. *sigh*
Did anyone else here see the SCTV spoof "Das Boobs"; Das Boot with the two busty women, running around and giggling?

I thought that a majority of the crew were new, as they weren't from the "old gang" and reletively inexperianced. Its only the officers that were vets afaik, and johann.
Lol I like the bit when Johann comes on the bridge "fresh air is good for you johann"...he just shakes his head and goes back to his diesels. Btw O/T but why does he listen to it, is he just obsessed with diesel engines or is there a reason for it?

Aye the crew is said to be new, the Captains said he feels old when being together with so many youngsters.
Maybe Johann can hear if there's any malfunction with the engines, for ex. if they don't turn as many in a minute as they should or do they move swiftly enough. That's my guess, though I'm not a professional. :)

By "listening" to the diesels (actually more like feeling the vibrations through your ear...try it!) an experienced mechanic, like our friend Johann, would be able to pick up on impending faults like worn bearings, crankshaft problems etc. :hmm:
Or maybe he just gets a kick out of it...:o

I have it on my Creative Zen 30gb.:smug:
Portable Das Boot.......
I love the bit where U-96 is skimming the waves chasing a convoy, very, very cool :yep:
I've never being able to recreate it in SH3 GWX, my boat seems to have a very heavy lead weight attached to the bow
Wish there was a improved bouancy mod..... :hmm::hmm:

One thing that has been lost in time is our ability to make things. Back in the WW2 era the men that worked on machinery were real mechanics..NOT "parts changers" like we are today. If something on ship broke and they didn't have a part, they would just make a workable one from stuff that was available..
My dad, who was a millwright, made all of his own tools for working on machinery.
My Uncle Al went into the merchant marine in 1936 and I saw some of his handy work in building boilers. A one inch cut through steel with a blow torch which looked like it had been cut with a saw blade...it was perfect!
Our fathers grew up making do with what they could make. We are not like that.
