View Full Version : Maintaining depth in GWX

Since I finally got a boat that's save to take deeper than 150m (XXI) i bumped into a problem. When in silent running, my boat keeps getting deeper (about 1m every 2-3 minutes game time) when i am below 150m. Above that depth it stays where it's ordered to. The only way to stop it from going deeper is to go faster than 2-3 knots. That's a real bummer because silent running isn't possible for me once i get past the 150m.
I did a little testing with other boats and it's the same, so it's not just the buggy XXI. I just didn't notice it because i never dared to dive that deep.
I am using GWX 1.03 with "reduced positive buoyancy" activated.
Anyone else got this problem or am i just a bloody newbie who doesn't know that this is intentional?

No I get it too in the XXI...you have to run it at about 5knts for it just to keep level, otherwise you go deeper.

It's a fine balancing act, you need a minimum of 2-3 knots to be able to control your boat at extreme depths. However, the trade off is a loss of 'silent running' this equals the difficulties faced by submarines in similar conditions during the war. :arrgh!:

These difficulties ended my last career :damn:
couldn't choose between giving up depth and giving up silence, got crushed!
It's the same with other uboat types.

Well if it's another part of GWX realism I'll have to deal with it just like a real Kaleun. :smug:
It's just bad that the game can't recognize anything over 2 knots as silent running because the XXI was able to go 5-6 knots being as silent as other boats going 2.
That would've been a great advantage. Going really silent and still being able to maintain extreme depths.

You could always mess with Trim and Drain................

Actually, I think you will find if you set for 4 knots, the XXI can still be unheard, if the destroyer is very very close you will need to slow down, but distance variables factor in I believe you should be able to go a bit quicker than 2 knots, but slower then 5 knots and remain unheard.
You will have to play with it. I use GWX myself and have spent a lot of time learning the ropes to become a better player and catch up with these guys here.

Learning by doing i guess....:)
I already overestimated the abilities of the XXI. Had to let an Illustrious-class and 3 Didos go away because i thought that i am now some sort of invisible to any escort. Got depthcharged by 6 of them before i even was in position to shoot. :damn:
Luckily i got away with little damage but i now will treat this "wunderwaffe" just as it was my old VIIC.

I push my undamaged IXB as deep as 190m repeatedly trying to escape from escorts several times....no problems so far (GWX last version).... As for the depth keeping problem just wait for depth charges to go down....accelerate and gain 15-20 m, then slowly down again.....

Don't forget that close depth charges will also change your boat depth even without flooding. If you haven't already the GWX manual is well worth the read  , amazing work.
'GWX varies your U-boat’s buoyancy after a close depth charge detonation. This may result in your U-boat being temporarily blown to the surface by a depth charge exploding underneath you, or being driven deeper by depth charge explosions just above you'

agreed. its a real pain in the neck. when you are running silent, trying to get far enough away from the escorts after you have attcked a convoy. and you are getting deeper and deeper.you just have to wait untill they are heading away from you ,increase speed to rise out of crush range.then judge when to go silent again as the escorts have picked you up again. you can finally do it. but it takes a lot of time and patience.
