Can someone explain what the numbers in brackets are for next to experience and also next to efficiency? I had a look in the guides section but found nothing and the manuals also very vague.

The experience numbers are the total number of "promotion points" (as we call it in the Army) needed before the crewman can be promoted to the next rank.

For instance, in this screenshot (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v258/LukeFF/?action=view&current=SH4Img26-5-2007_23.jpg), the crewman's total experience level is 0, and the (+0) indicates he has not gained any experience points so far. He will need 7150 points in order to be promoted. His efficiency level is at 100 out of a total possible point value of 117. That (+7) indicates he has received a 7-point performance bonus from the Officer of the Deck, i.e., the crew leader in the Command Room. It's a leadership bonus, akin to what the Combat Mission series models.

The number in the brackets for the experience is the experience gained since you last "visited" the crew management screen.

If I have well understand your answer, The Crew leader is giving efficiency bonus points to the crew.
So, do you know why all the guys of one team (for instance the third team of the front torpedo room) do not have the same bonus? The range is 0 to 11.
Do you know how can I maximise this bonus points for all my crew?
Thank you for yours answers.

I just returned from a successful mission -101tonne of merchant ships sunk. Though there were lots of available promotions on the left, I was told that none of my crew have been approved for promotion? :nope: Any ideas? At this rate, I can't wait to finish the game (I usually finish what I started) and move onto the next one.
help?

Was it your first cruise? Don't worry they will start rolling in.

Yeah usually at the beginning and later on the promotions get sparse. I'm at a point where virtually my entire crew are Chief Petty Officers/Officers, and each patrol get between 0 and 3 promotions because it takes so much exp to level them up.

Oddly enough, Chief Petty Officers can get promoted to Ensigns, which I don't really think happened in real life (I thought enlisted and officer promotion tracks were separate with a few exceptions- I never heard of an E-10 busting his hump up to O-1). And once they reach Lieutenant, the real fun begins, you need a whopping 20,000 exp to promote them from there.

Do you know what happens when a LT reaches the 20,000 exp points? Can you really promote him to LTCDR, so that he gets his own command?

None of my LTs have gotten there yet (I'm in late '43, started in 41) but if you look in the instruction manual it shows the insignia for all the ranks. This lets you see the highest rank achievable.

It appears officers go from Ensign, to Lieutenant Junior Grade, to Lieutenant. But I don't know if the game displays the 'junior grade' for Lieutenants.

Actually Enlisted Men were promoted to officers during the war. They were called mustangs. Sometimes the rank was permanent. sometimes it reverted back to what it was before the promotion. But it would have to suck to go from a chief were everybody listened to your opinion (if they were smart) to a junior officer were nobody listens to you:down:

I'm pretty sure that the game does display the 'junior grade' for Lieutenants. In fact since installing TM 1.6 all my officers have been promoted to LT Senior Grad (took me about 7 cruises, depending on whether the officer was an Ensign or a Lieutenant Junior Grade).

The game automatically promotes sailors from one Seaman or Petty Officer rate to the next without your input. You can only manually promote sailors from the Seamen rates to the Petty Officer rates and from the Petty Officer rates to the officers.

Ok thanks. This is definitely not my 1st mission. Im in 27 March 1944, so this damn war is nearly over and I can play something else.... Maybe I'll try some single missions. This patrolling is boring.
