I had a fair amount of renown (1500) when I sunk a german merchant for about 11,000 grt. Okay it was stupid, I know.
But the same patrol I sunk 25,000 grt of allied ships and the next patrol another 29,000 grt of allied ships.
I still have -400 renown, and although it was a stupid mistake to sink that German ship, I think the penalty in renown is outrageous!
I can forget about any upgrades let alone a new boot.
Sounds to me like you got off easy...
If it were realistic, you would've been court martialed, stripped of command and possibly served prison time or been shot.

U-333 also sank a german merchant. His commander, KL Cremer, was court-martialed but absolved, because the Spreewald (that was the ship) was in a wrong position.
I knew this story by a BdU message during a patrol. The last message said: "Cremer, Sie sind Idiot!":rotfl:

So I take it the Spreewald wasn't flying the German flag aside from being in the wrong position? Would you see his flag through the periscope?

I saw shore batteries blast a Hospital ship just outside of Trondheim, bet THEY didn't get slapped
Interesting the mention of "Spreewald" An unfortunate occurance.
The radiolog eXpansion project has several messages covering Spreewald btw.

Yes. The true story is that the "Spreewald" was flying the norwegian flag as the merchat "Elg" of that nationality. She used wrong radio codes and was in the wrong position, so Cremer sunk it. He just couldnīt imagine that he was in fact sinking a german merchant... who carried aboard 300 prisoners taken by the raider "Kormoran".
This story is taken from a phantastic U-boote page in spanish, Uhistoria.com:
http://www.u-historia.com/uhistoria/historia/inhistoria.htm
If you know spanish language, donīt forget to visit this page. Simply phantastic.
And also phantastic the work of GWX team: I received this message (a lot of messages between BdU and Cremer) while I was heading to Freetown aboard my boat.
GWX devteam, uhistoria. nice work!!

Do you think that was an outrageus penalty???? :nope:
Wait until you have to face a firing squad in Altona or Neuengamme.
Then you wil have reasons to cmplain about it. ;)

when you finish that you can clean the head of every ship in port right down to that rather trashed looking fishing trawler.
how did you manage to sink the german ship? Poor weather? thick fog? on purpose just to see what would happen?
SH3 does a pretty good job of splitting up the good guys from the bad guys... seems like a difficult mistake to make unless it was a long shot in weather at night or something.

That merchant was in the wrong place using the wrong codes.
