View Full Version : When you know you're going to die
Since its always fun to read how other people do in the game (and laugh at them on occasion), I thought it would be fun to share stories about when you just know you arent going to escape that destroyer, or there's just one to many bombers in the air.
Ill start with one of my favorites. I was patrolling in my brand new IX-B out of Williamshaven, and had to take the English Channel to get to my patrol grid. While running through the channel at silent running, I came across a merchant. Sinking it must have called every Destroyer in the Royal Navy after me, because before long I was dodging 4 DDs. The channel is shallow, so I was forced to run at parascope depth. Bad move, as somehow, they still heard me, and began pinging me. The destroyers set up their depth charge runs, and I desperately tried avoiding them. Two of the destroyers ended up sinking themselves after ramming me (accidental or not, I still laughed when I saw it), but more showed up. Of course, depth charges damaged me to the point where I sunk to the bottom of the channel from flooding, and that opened up for the destroyers to just take turns dropping charges on me.
Anyone else got any good ones?

i got one
Oberluetnant z. See Erwin Kramer and U-104 were patrolling off Freetown June 1941. I was attacking a convoy at dusk and right when i was going to fire i had a bad feeling about something and i noticed that the ships looked like they were zig zagging, so i looked around to make sure that there werent any escorts that were closing in on me. Looked around and at bearing 250, i see a big ugly destroyer coming right at me probably 400 meters away and closing fast. Apparently my sonar guy didnt feel it was necessary to inform me about that one even though i ask where the nearest warship is every few minutes. Well anyway, i order full speed and 90 meters. at about 25 or 30 meters he caught up with me and let me have it. heavy flooding, pretty much everything damaged or destroyed. couldnt control the diving and dove to some ridiculous depth where i was crushed like a can of tuna. But even though i died a horrible horrible death, it was still awesome because of the awesome AI in GWX
Mittelsee January 1944 35km east of Valetta harbour Malta:
Decided to have a go at sinking the Italian fleet that was now ensconced in Valetta after our ally's cowardly surrender.
Eight patrolling DD's, Corvette's etc one picked me up on his hydrophones and called all his mates over for an arsekicking party.:damn:
Lasted about an hour before they found their mark and started pounding me with hedghogs, DC's etc.

First started playing GWX,attacked a convoy and got sent down by a DD,went as deep as I dared but the racket was ferocious:othought to myself"thats a hell of alot of trash cans they're dropping"went to external cam and gave up counting when I got to 7 DD's:damn:circling above, needless to say death came pretty swiftly after that:dead:all I could think was :roll:bugger!

Was closing in on Gibralter from the east when i got a report of a warship closing from the west of me. I was at periscope depth...middle of the day...water was like glass.
It ended up being a Task Force with 2 battlewagons, 2 cruisers, and a beehive of destroyers as a few of the regular patroling ones were around. I was in a good position...went all quiet...but they heard me anyway.
So i went all ahead flank at the nearest BB...and i got off a hasty salvo at it. Just one hit before i got my first DC's dropped on me.
Well...i had critical damage...had to maintain ahead full just to not sink like a rock.
So i blew the ballast...hit the surface...manned the Deck Gun...and preceded to pummel that nearest Battleship smartly....
Well until the whole British Med Squadron unloaded on me. And might i say this...5.1 surround sound is pretty neat with shots comming in from all angles.
Took them about 10 seconds to turn my beautiful sub into a can of cheese wiz.

It sucks more if you didn't see it coming :damn:
Was doing a succesful escape about 2 kts at 220 meters, after a succesful convoy attack, and still close to the convoy. Couldn't get it up at that speed (the boat I mean), so had to make noise. Then they heard me. Cought in this dilemma, I wasted too much time and depth, and imploded at about 200 meters.
That really sucked. Was a good career.

I was off the Western Approches, sometime in 1941. Weather was filthy -- heavy fog and heavy seas. I figured I was safe since the weather was so bad so I came up to recharge my batteries. Half an hour later a lone DD comes out of the fog and rams me amidships. Now whether it saw me or I just happened to be in the way I'll never know. One minute it wasn't there, then it was. Sound collision alarm! It hits and I go down. Critical damage. Destroyed compartments. Much flooding. Loud screaming. We'll never see home again.
Scratch one U-boat.
