I've stuck. :damn:
I'm on a photograph mission to Tokyo harbor. Is it possible to get to that harbor undetected? No matter how I try 3 gunboats always finds me and starts bombing me. Besides, I'm in shallow waters...
It would be nice to get some tips what should I do or what shouldn't... :-?

Trial and error, I'm afraid.
I had the cr*p kicked out of me so many times on this mission! In the end I found it is possible to stay submerged for most of the way. I found a "channel" by creeping forward and pinging regularly to get "depth under keel" - Of course, that often resulted in my being detected and having the "cr*p" kicked out of me. so back to the save. etc.
There are also certain "givens" - constantly running silent and never at more than 2 knots ( it takes a lonnnnnnng time! ); only moving after dark and lying very still and very quiet during the day; minimum use of the periscope; staying submerged - only surfacing in the dead of night for the shortest time possible so as not to asphyxiate the crew.
Good luck!
Thats nothing!
I had to insert an agent into Kobe. Yeah silent running and never surface is all very well. But then i surface at night to insert that agent, and within minutes, ive got coastal batteries, zeros and DDs coming at me. Still thought, after hours of trying to get out alive, i met a lone CV just off the coast of Japan, i sank the bastard and sailed home.
good times

Yes, that Tokyo harbor mission. I still have nightmares about it...
For me, frequent saves and re-loads were the only way to do it.. Make sure to get several saves along the way, just in case. And save under different file names, don't just overwrite the same save over and over again.
I neglected saves on the way in and got very far before getting sunk. Then I had to start over on the outside of the bay. It was several hours land many re-loads before I got even close to the spot where I got caught first. I finally made it in and completed the mission. The way out was surprisingly easy. What was up with that?
That recon mission was my 2nd objective on the patrol. Since then I've become hesitant to ask for another objective and mostly complete just the initial one assigned.
For sake of realism I now return straight to port after a recon mission. All those photos are worthless if I get sunk.
I've stuck. :damn:

When I did it, I stayed submerged (2kts) from the entrance to the harbor. ON the way back, I ran low on battery juice, waited until it was dark, Surfaced, "Ahead Flank" and watched DD movement and went at the opportune time. :D

How do you evade those little bombin' pingers? I'm running at 2kts, periscope depth, silence running. SO detects that ship. It could be about 2km far from me, but suddenly it's coming fast to my direction and with easy finds me. It starts pinging and bombing me. Unbelievable...
Give some tips please about evading those bastards.

I got in and out/Lucky I guess..I went on surface at night almost all the way.Took the photos and headed out..I took my most damage from shore batteries..still managed to dive repair at get out..fun:arrgh!:
I just ignore those missions since real submarines didn't go places like that.

I've had this mission twice in a row. The first time in was my fav. So i will tell you about it
It had been rainning for three days strait when I got to the beginning of the run. I dove to pariscope depth and crawled ahead at 1~2kts. You couldn't see 10 feet infront of you. after scoping out the area I dove another 2~3ft. and layed out a corse to follow the centre of the channel. I got dc sometime around midnight but it was off to my stern. When i showed up to take photos i had to get within 1000 yards of the ships. On my way back out I ran mostly on the surface, during the day, away from the centre of the channel and only dove when i had to cross the centre. For a number of reasons luck was on my side. First the weather was so bad you could only see a few yards around. The swells were so high that the gunboats were over powered and most were on fire. The DD's knew i was around but they couldn't find me.
The second time in was a clear sky and the found me pretty quick and i got DC to death. On of the charges actually hit the conning tower befor exploding.

How? Just return to port?
I do a patrol outside the harbor area.
You take a renown hit I think, and you might be in trouble if you do it a lot.

Yep, if it's a mission in shallow water with many patroling escorts, I just go
sink ships anywhere. Suicide missions are NOT my idea of success....

If it seems halfway realistic, sure, but harbors to take pictures? Dropping spies at Japan? No.
Coastwatcher at Vella Lavella, sure, spy in downtown tokio? no.
